Aquaman #13 Chiaroscuro #4 Codename Firearm #4 & 5 Conan #3 Conan the Savage #3 Darkseid vs. Galactus: The Hunger Fate #12 Flash #106 Invisibles #13 Kurt Busiek's Astro City #1 New Gods #1 Power of Shazam #8 Sovereign Seven #4 Spectre #34 Starman #12 Vertigo Gallery: Dreams and Nightmares #1

Wow. Astro City is twenty years old this week, and I've still yet to read it.
In fact, I literally have not read a single comic book published twenty years ago this month (though I own roughly a dozen of them). This was after I dropped out of buying new comics, and the only stuff I have from this era I acquired in inexpensive runs after the fact that I have yet to read.

Don't see anything I bought or read at the time but I did read the Invisibles about ten years later in TPB form. And I've read the first couple Astro City TPBs a year or two ago. I'd say Invisibles is every bit the masterpiece it's reputed to be, while AC is one of those things that I can see is very well written but just doesn't click with me for some reason.

Wow. Astro City is twenty years old this week, and I've still yet to read it. Boy, did you ever miss out! Personally, I was still on my comics buying hiatus at this point, which had lasted since around 1988 or 1989. But seeing that Astro City #1 came out this week, I can pinpoint my return to regular buying to next month -- September 1995. I know this because I found a comic market stall near my work and bought Astro City #1 and #2 together, with #2 being the new issue for that month. Anyway, comics from 20 years ago this month that I've nowadays got in my collection are... Astro City #1 The Spectacular Spider-Man #228 The Spectacular Spider-Man #229 Spider-Man #63 Star Wars: River of Chaos #3 Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron #2 Untold Tales of Spider-Man #2 Web of Spider-Man #129

Looks like I wasn't regularly buying monthlies back in August of 1995. Most of the last 20 years by comic buying habits have been months or even a year or two of cold turkey, then binges where I buy a lot of what I missed. I own maybe 25 of these books.

You've got time to read Action Comics Weekly but not Astro City? Get your priorities in order mister! There are quite a few good series from this time period. I'm a bit surprised you haven't at least read Ostrander's Spectre.

I read the first ten issues, and I seem to be the only person in the world who didn't love it. Might be because I'm such a fan of the Golden and Bronze Age depictions. I do intend to give it another try at some point.

I do intend to give it another try at some point. I'm with you but more strongly. I read the first five or so issues and found it really unpleasant. I dropped it off at the used book shop for the give-money-to-charity shelf immediately 'cause I didn't want it in my house. (I dislike the Bronze Age version quite a bit as well.)

It definitely wallowed in misery a bit too much for my liking. I appreciate when a good comic can unexpectedly tackle real-world tragedy in a single issue or storyline, but the series did seem like it was going to be laying heavy doses of "here's everything that sucks in the real world" on its readers.
