Second Coming # 1 by Mark Russell !, Richard Pace and Leonard Kirk Jesus comes back 2,000 years later opposite Superman Sunstar, who fixes everything with his fists. Made me smile and chuckle; great dialogue. Love Mark Russell's stuff and definitely on my pull list. Highly recommended from Ahoy ! Comics

Superman: Year One #1 The writing is ... odd, but at least it's not full of whores, ethnic/feminist/religious caricatures, and the other offensive junk Miller's become infamous for in recent decades, which is nice. Hopefully the following issues will follow suit and keep out of the cesspool. I really don't know why JRjr has drawn half the characters as bobbleheads, though. I know his art's always been an acquired taste, but I like most of his '90s output; the stuff in this issue looks really sloppy by comparison.

I read Batman White Knight issues 1 to 7 a day ago. Not bad but the story is kind of odd especially seeing Clayface's eyes and brain s

I finished reading the War of the Realms event mini. If you've been following Aaron's run on Thor, this was a very satisfying and entertaining conclusion to this long-standing conflict. Aaron draws in other MU heroes in a way that doesn't feel forced while seeing how this conflict strains and strengthens the bonds of Odin's family. I also read a few of the tie-in minis which mainly expanded on key scenes from the War itself, all were fun but not necessary to understand or enjoy the main event miniseries. The conclusion left certain characters with new choices and new directions. Dauterman's art is simply gorgeous throughout.

Yep WotR was really decent, though, as ever with these events, the tie-ins were pretty uniformly awful

Here's a taste of a couple panels/pages from this... -M That is seriously gorgeous. They don’t have it at our local library, so it looks as if I’ll be parting with a few shekels in the near future!

Most library will buy any recent book you ask them for. I do it all the time and just asked the Ottawa library to get this one a couple weeks ago.

Deathstroke vs Batman Written by Christopher Priest Penciled by Carlo Pagulayan I read the Deathstroke vs Batman 6 issue arc in the new Deathstroke series. I'm not reading the regular title overall since I'm not a huge Deathstroke fan, but I wanted to see what he would do with both of these characters. Overall, I thought it was a decent story. Priest crafts a tale with aspects of fatherhood with Damian's heritage coming into question as the starting point. This idea of fatherhood also extends to Bruce and Deathstroke's father figures themselves becoming involved. Priest I feel puts more emphasis on Batman and Deathstroke essentially having a big argument about how wrong their approaches in life are rather than the mystery regarding Damian. That's what the book feels like it was about to me. Anyway, decent read. Carlo Pagulayan has some really good art in these issues, and Ed Benes even does an issue himself. Cool.

Read Grand Abyss Hotel the other day. Will try to post more later, but it was beautiful and amazing. Books like it are what re-ignite my love for the hobby after one too many formulaic big two stories.

The Underwater WelderIt describes itself as an unproduced Twilight Zone episode, and that's exactly what it's like; I enjoyed it immensely. The downside is that it's a fairly quick read; just as soon as I'd immersed myself in its world, it was over.

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II Written by James Tynion IV Art by Freddie Williams II I read the first volume of this, and from what I remember, it was okay. It's essentially the same deal for it's sequel here. Basic plot is the Turtles are chasing the Foot Clan, and Donnie has his confidence as a fighter shaken when he loses a fight to one of the solders. He goes alone to send a message to Batman through a dimensional portal, but is attacked by the Foot Clan, which causes an accident forcing him to switch places with Bane from the DC universe in Gotham City, who arrives in New York, and starts to take over. Batman and the Turtles have to meet up through the dimensional plane to try and save the day again. I guess the story for me just wasn't that meaty. Maybe my expectations were too high? Not that I necessarily need to have a story that asks deep questions, but perhaps this just was more treading of the same ground previously. It did remind me of a typical Saturday morning cartoon type of deal. I like James Tynion IV, and seem to find myself reading a lot of his work. This was just meh though.

Not super recent but I just read the first volume of Greg Rucka's Stumptown after thinking the commercial for the new show looked really good. I don't know how I've missed this book for so long, it's a fantastic hard boiled detective story that has an amazing cast of characters.

I don't know how I've missed this book for so long, it's a fantastic hard boiled detective story that has an amazing cast of characters. I need to get the earliest issues of that (or the first trade). I came in on one of the later minis when I first stumbled across the series circa 2014 or so. -M The first mini was the one I just read and it was amazing, it introduced her whole world right off the bat and the mix of mystery and action was great. I need to track down the rest asap.

Received from Amazon last night: Godzilla Rulers of Earth Book 2 collecting issues 13 through 25 of the series. Talk about your GONZO all out Monster Royal Rumble. Pure delight as the comic delivers fights and scenes you just won't see in classic Toho Zilla movies. The aliens are on Earth to take over and turn us into their new home (destroyed by Ghidorah) and the alien commander poses as a Russian trying to sell an ARMY of Mecha-Godzilla's to the highest bidders as "protection" against Earth's monsters. Of course the commander is really plotting against his world's Supreme Leader until that Leader arrives and is dissatisfied with the progress and starts an all out invasion plot to destroy the monsters of Earth. Of course Zilla don't take lightly to such demands and begins fighting back and sends out the call wherein all the TOHO monsters unite in stopping the invasion and destroying the alien monsters and the aliens alike.
We get to see Anguirus take a beat down from an alien Mecha-Godzilla. We get the King of Monsters kicking the butts of the Mecha army (6-8 I think?) as Anguirus recovers to lend a helping tail and where Zilla grabs Anguirus by the tail and swings him around to begin using him as a weapon of mass destruction on the Mecha army. Space Godzilla is coming to Earth and the alien commander sends Gigan to confront him which fails. Ghidorah arrives with a robot head replacing his middle head and Zilla trashes him and he runs away. King Ceasar is awakened and kicks giant monster butt. Then the alien overlord sends in his Oviod army of slugs which will take on the form/powers of the monsters they fight and we see the other Toho monsters getting their singles match. Jet Jaguar the robot shows up and enlarges to confront Gigan and puts him in a headlock from behind and uses Gigan like a giant chainsaw on the alien monsters. Of course the alien's have underestimated the stamina, anger and wrath of Earth's true protectors and that the Toho monsters combine forces to confront a common enemy. Zilla teams up with Space Godzilla to escape from an alien prison and screeches the to arms alert where ALL HELL breaks loose and Zilla goes full on ATOMIC atomizing anything and everything dumb enough to get in his way.
Full of thrills and monsters and insane fights this is one big delight from beginning to end. The ENTIRE series will definitely be a true classic thrilling fans of Giant Monsters and Godzilla for many years to come leaving you with knowing who the TRUE King of the Monsters will always be!
