A movie I've never seen. Not a big fan of comedies in general (though quite a few are among my favorite films ever), & really silly ones in particular do nothing for me except provoke my avoidance instincts.

I'm a big fan of Airplane and all the Naked Gun movies. I remember when Airplane came out, myself and a friend of mine thought we'd go see a movie for lack of anything else to do, even though we didnt know what was playing. When we got to the mall and looked the posters, he decided he wanted to see the Robert Redford movie, Brubaker, but I was never a fan of Redford's so I opted for Airplane. Can't remember now if I'd heard anything about it beforehand: obviously there was no internet - did they show previews for upcoming new movie releases on tv back then the way they do now? Can't recall. Anyway, whatever moved me to give it a try, I've been glad ever since that I made that choice.

I heard a bit from Patton Oswalt on the comedy station I was listening to about a movie called Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, that was a real movie made in the 70's and released some 30 years later on DVD as one of the worst movies ever made. His whole joke was how the guy making it could pitch such a horrible concept and how besides that it still got made.
I think the worst movie I've seen on the lines of recent movies mentioned is The Tingler. Despite Vincent Price, it was just too much to take seriously.

Yes but you might have thought differently if you saw it in a select movie theater during its initial run. Certain seats among the audience were wired to give a mild electric shock during key moments of the movie. Of course, this was back in the 50s when you could get away with all sorts of stuff without getting sued

I think the worst movie I've seen on the lines of recent movies mentioned is The Tingler. Despite Vincent Price, it was just too much to take seriously. Death Bed is a very worthwhile movie; Oswalt being an ass about it is, I suppose, part of his act or something (with which I'm completely unfamiliar; I know his name & gather that he has legit fan cred, but that's about it). The narrator, from whose point of view the movie unfolds (IIRC), is the noted rock critic Dave Marsh, for one thing. For another, memory tells me (I haven't seen the movie in 5 or 6 years at least) that at least visually, his character is physically very reminiscent of the famed Decadent artist Aubrey Beardsley. And of course the director made the movie on his own; there was no "pitch" involved. Very nice guy. Not too long after the movie was rediscovered & issued on DVD, he showed up on the Classic Horror Film Board & chatted with a few of us who'd expressed fondness for the film. Just out of curosity, is Oswalt just a capital-P prick who could do with a sound thrashing, period? Also, with all due respect, if you're using "worst" & The Tingler in the same sentence, I'm going to suggest, I believe not for the first time, that horror movies just aren't your thing, the way ... say ... that Henry Miller or Charles Bukowski aren't & wouldn't be mine.

Certain seats among the audience were wired to give a mild electric shock during key moments of the movie. Of course, this was back in the 50s when you could get away with all sorts of stuff without getting sued I have heard as much, and I want to say it was even advertised on the DVD of the movie when I watched it. Like the original trailer or some advertisement saying as much. Death Bed is a very worthwhile movie; Oswalt being an ass about it is, I suppose, part of his act or something (with which I'm completely unfamiliar; I know his name & gather that he has legit fan cred, but that's about it). As far as Oswalt goes, it seems the times I do listen to this comedy station many comedians build their act upon the backs of something else at the subject or person's expense. And since the station plays random bits from comedian's full acts, I never really get the taste for a particular comedian unless I have heard their acts before or if they are new, and I can watch one on netflix. I read a bit about the movie on wikipedia, but didn't read too much into it since it's available on Netflix DVD and I just added it to my list. I use to really enjoy science fiction more than I seem to now. Even the older stuff, that I use to watch. There will always be favorites like Godzilla films, Beast from 20000 Fathoms, Them!, One Million Miles To Earth, and Journey to the Center of the Earth (James Mason) ... thinking on him, 2000 Leagues Under the Sea. But there's not a lot of others that never made it past whatever change my taste in entertainment went through and when (which I couldn't pin point). But then newer science fiction suffers the same from my tastes, and I find I like even less of it than I do the older stuff. I mean if I were to mention one science fiction movie of modern times I have watched a second time, by choice, all the way through, and enjoyed as much as the first time, it would be Monsters, which was on Netflix instant at one time. I couldn't tell you what's changed but I know earlier in my life we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The Tingler is a fantastic movie! One of William Castle's best and a great performance from Vincent Price. Possibly the first LSD trip on film. Love that bathtub scene.

Count me in as a fan of The Tingler!
Also, Airplane! is hysterical. I haven't seen it for a long time. Would love to see it again.

Count me in as a fan of The Tingler! I've got to say that I'm impressed that people have been discussing something called "The Tingler" for nearly a page without any of the obvious innuendo popping up. Maybe if it had been a French movie.
