Caught the 1941 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde on TCM this morning. While Spencer Tracy is an outstanding actor this version isn't nearly as good as the two previous incarnations.

Beetlejuice is on IFC right now, and later on today...

No--even with the horse dream, it's pretty bland. Overall, I prefer the Frederic March version. But the horse dream is great! I DVRed the Spencer Tracy version last year and kept it on the DVR for a few weeks just to watch the horse dream a few times before deleting it.

The '82 Swamp Thing movie was much better than I remembered. It's still a terrible film and the special effects makeups are atrocious even for the '80s. Almost hard to believe it's from Wes Craven. ♥ Adrienne Barbeau.

The Karate Kid I II and III Now I liked I I Loved II more Specifically Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko in II (I knew a girl in High School who looked just like her!) But III always fell a little short to me. If for no other reason than the fact that Daniel was actually afraid of Barnes. Now Barnes was aggressive and a frequent rule breaker when it came to the Tournament but in Okinawa Daniel had beaten a guy who wanted to take his life. Not his trophy, not his Title...His Life! and Now all of a sudden Daniel's afraid of some jerk who was just hired to score a few points in a tournament?!? Sorry I'm not buying it!

I watched Wes Craven's the last house on the left on Youtube yesterday, and now I need to scrub my soul. All I had heard of it is that it was "scary", and I expected something with devils and ghosts and stuff…
… but people are far scarier!

Yeah I watched that for the first time a few years ago and pretty much agree with your sentiment. There's only one other movie that's done that to me, and I didn't even finish it. The human capacity for depravity can far worse than any fictional or supernatural creature.

Figured this was the best place to mention that Barnes & Noble has a ton of DVDs/Blus for 30% off (plus another 10% for members), including Criterion. I got Polanski's Macbeth for $28 after tax ($40 retail). Their B1G1 sale is also coming up in the next week or so.

Last year or so I made it my goal to watch every film preserved in the Library of Congress by the National Film Registry. Since 1989, 25 films are selected each year to be preserved because they have been deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. To date there have been 625 films preserved in the NFR, I have viewed 81 of them. I figured that watching the films preserved by the NFR would be a great way to ensure I watched American's most significant films, a better indication tool than the Oscars in my opinion. Now when I say "film", I don't mean just theatrical movies. There are significant documentaries, theatrical shorts like The Three Stooges' Punch Drunks, a Betty Boop short, experimental films, etc. One I really enjoyed was a family's home movie of when they won a trip to Disneyland. And of course the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination is preserved as well. If you want to learn more about the NFR, there's a great documentary from 3 years ago about it called These Amazing Shadows. Or also here's the Wikipedia link, where you can also look at the list of preserved films. Check off which ones you've already seen, and maybe the list will inspire you to catch up on some classics. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_RegistryI just watched 3 this past week. Halloween, which isn't my style but it's one off the list, 12 Angry Men, which I really enjoyed, and Michael Jackson's Thriller video. I had been avoiding watching the latter because I'm not a Michael Jackson fan but the video was only 12-13 minutes so I figured it was one of the quicker ones to cross off the list. This year's films will be announced in December. You can make nominations that the board will vote on. Nominees must be at least 10 years old. Anyway, that sounds more like an infomercial, haha, but really I encourage you guys to explore the National Film Registry. Fascinating undertaking. I'm curious. Generally speaking, do you think the NFR has been on the ball with their selections? Whenever I'm not exploring a specific theme in my film viewing, I generally use the Top 1000 Greatest Films list put out by theyshootpictures.com. Of all the Top Greatest films lists I've ever seen, this one has aligned best with my own personal tastes (though I still wince at the idea of Citizen Kane being the greatest film ever made).

But you could make the argument its a noir... Agh! I thought noir was about powerless people generally not even able to comprehend what they've been swept up in. I thought noir involved crime, sex, and violence, and hard men. These competing definitions are killing me.

Wesley - are you watching them chronologically by the year they were inducted or made, or alphabetically, or what?
Just curious because, after looking at the list, I can see so many film that I've always wanted to see, and so many I've never heard of. Hard to know where to start!

I've not seen it. It's never even crossed my mind as something to even watch in complete boredom (not saying it's a boring movie, since I haven't seen it) but can there be A greatest movie of all time? I could never commit to there being ONE greatest thing in any catergory. There's too many variables for something to remain the greatest of anything.
