So, I live near Worcester, MA. Worcester is... interesting... but one thing it has going for it is that, despite it's relatively small size (around 165k people), it has a small but world class art museum. They've got works from pretty much everyone, including Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, you name it. Plus, thanks to the recent merger with the Higgins Museum of Armory, they now house what I believe is the largest collection of medieval arms and armor in America. Well, it's been a while since I have been, and I noticed that they were holding a special exhibit on Samurai, curated by the editor of Giant Robot magazine. So I went down to see it. The show itself was cool, an interesting mix of artifacts like swords and armor, plus contemporary reimaginings of Samurai from pop culture. Certainly worth the trip. But as I was going in, I noticed this sign outside the door to the exhibit: Yes, it's Usagi himself! Natrually, I had to try and track down this Helmutt's House to see what the deal was. Helmutt's House, it turns out, is a section in the back of the museum's exhibit on Knights. This area is full of all sorts of awesome armor and weapons from medieval Europe through the present. How present? Well, a certain Dark Knight was in attendance as well, standing watch over everything: Finally, though, in the back, I found Helmutt's House. And there was the motherload: A collection of original Usagi Yojimbo art on loan from Stan Sakai himself! Including this three page sequence form the tea ceremony issue, #93: And this splash from Senso: Now that's what I call a museum experience! I certainly wasn't expecting to see Usagi Yojimbo original art at my local museum. What a great treat.

Wow, nice! I saw a version of that display a while back in Boston, but while they used Usagi in the advertising, they definitely didn't have original art! I'll definitely have to make the trip out there!

I used to go the Higgins Museum quite often (being a medievalist and all), and hadn't realized it had been moved/merged with another museum (12 years away from New England can lead to a lac of being on top of things). The exhibit looks fabulous though. Very cool to see it.

They didn't have things like that when I lived near Worcester (1988-1991).
I've just started getting into Usagi; got book 1 signed by Stan Sakai at a recent Emerald City con. Wish I could see the exhibit, it looks great!

I'd love to meet him. He seems like one of the nicest guys imaginable. Him and Sergio Aragones would be the first two I lined up for if I attended a con.

My chat with Stan Sakai was a brief one; there was a line of people behind me. But he was really nice. We talked a bit about the then-recent exhibit of samurai armor at the Portland Art Museum; he said he'd been there for the opening of that exhibit. When he had finished signing my book, I gave my best wishes to him and his family - this was when his wife was seriously ill.
I had a longer chat with Sergio Aragones at Emerald City a year or two earlier. I gave him an idea for a cartoon based on a pun, and he said that Mexicans like himself, and other Spanish-speaking people tended not to do puns. English lends itself to punning because there are many different words for the same thing, and words that have multiple different meanings. Spanish tends the other way - one word, one meaning. I also asked him if his ancestors were from the region of Aragon in Spain, and he said as far as he knew, they were.

Same here, I loved meeting them last year and during one of the lulls during one of the big presentations I had the opportunity to just hang out with them. I'm definitely going to have to go see this exhibit.

Thank you. Stan Sakai here.
I am currently in another exhibit at the Worcester Art Museum's Helmutt House, which includes originals for UY Saga 4, a 3-page story, a couple of double-page spreads, and even a page from my Samurai Hulk story for Marvel.
I don't know if Sergio is going, but I will be at the Boston Comic-con in August. My family and I plan to spend a few extra days there and turn it into a mini-vacation.

Oh well, I caught one a few years back at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and it was great so I'll just have to keep an eye out for next time. I still may take a trip out to Worcester though as it's a shame that I haven't visited such a nice place when it's only about half an hour away.
