George Freeman was good. He did a nice Jack of Hearts mini. Wonder what happened with this. I usually liked Freeman's work, myself, and looking through the graphic novel, it was pretty good work, although severely marred by the inconsistency resulting from six different inkers. This makes me suspect that this material was originally intended for serial format, likely in MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS, and was converted to this format on short notice. Perhaps Freeman's penciled pages had been completed and being held to be assigned to be inked pending final scheduling, and a hole in the MARVEL GRAPHIC NOVEL schedule opened up, requiring a quick inking turnaround time. Anyway, I appreciate what Freeman seems to be going for by establishing a distinctive face for the character, rather than what too many comics artists would do: have a generic female face in their artistic armory and rely on clothing and hairstyle to distinguish them (e.g., any Sal Buscema woman). Giving the Widow narrow slit eyes works ok on the interior pages, but boy, does it fail on the cover!

Can't believe the asking price for that GN was almost $10 with that hideous cover to promote it. The Widow in my avatar or these recent covers look so much better by comparison. Granted the latter has some Scarlet Johansson influence....

Anyone seen a date-stamp on a comic that looks like this? The cover date was early 1965 and the stamp looks like 17 Dec 1964. The seller's from Canada so I'm wondering if books distributed there looked like this.
I think all my other books with a stamp looks like this, with a month-date-year
I don't mind date-stamps, gives the book some provenance and was part of the distribution process and CGC doesn't seem to mind them either once they're not smudgy and obtrusive.

gotta be Canada, or even the UK with the European style date... that's neat!

I saw a seller list a signed book on ebay with no Certificate of Authenticity, and because there was no COA, he said he cannot sell to anyone in CA (California). Really? Is that a law there?

California is rife with laws that don’t make sense. That’s why many are leaving the state. None of that is true. People are leaving due to cost of living and California has no more wacky laws than any other State. And fewer horrible laws than Florida or Texas. Not a single person has left California because they have a law to protect consumers from forgeries.

I didn't know it extended to signed comics....I know the creator of this particular book, he's on Patreon and sometimes personally attends a Convention to sign books. I'll tell him those COAs are important...

Brad, they are definitely leaving because the governor is making crime legal. 900 limit before they send police , That's a license to steal. There's so many people leaving that they tried to pass a tax for moving.

And this is a Proposition, voted on by the people, not something the Governor did.

Brad, they are definitely leaving because the governor is making crime legal. 900 limit before they send police , That's a license to steal. There's so many people leaving that they tried to pass a tax for moving. Except you’ve completely misinterpreted those laws. There is nothing in California law that says that “they won’t send police if a theft is under $900.” What we colloquially call shoplifting is a commercial theft of less than $950 and is a misdemeanor. Guess what? In New York it’s a misdemeanor if it’s under $1000. The issue of whether police will be sent for misdemeanor calls is a local one decided by the local government and, frequently, the police entity themselves. There is no state law making it legal to steal or “not send police.” Keep in mind that the Conservative U.S. Supreme Court has told us that the police have absolutely no duty to actually do their job. I’m not going to get into the intricacies of the “exit tax” but, needless to say, unless you’re making over $30 million a year it doesn’t apply to you. Yes, there is a net loss of population for California since 2020. It is almost solely because the cost of housing is astronomical, contrary to what Fox News and YouTube would like you to believe.

Here is the language of the bill, it goes back some years: leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520160AB1570I think the intent really was to counter big problems with fake autograph sales, and what a COA really should represent. I'll give another type of COA situation I ran into sometime back. I picked up an Alex Ross Artist Proof many years ago from an art dealer who seemed pretty well established and trustworthy. Well, the regular print run was signed and autographed and sold through the WB Store back in the day. The AP prints were not, this dealer got his directly from Alex Ross' business. I realized awhile back that I didn't have a COA for it, not that I was planning to sell it, but just something I never noticed didn't come with it. I contacted the Alex Ross shop, and they were totally helpful, but explained that the COA's for both the WB run and the direct purchase AP copies were not issued by them (nor could they provide a replacement). They said the seller was responsible for issuing them, so WB was the actual COA issuer in the first case, though Alex has already signed them before they received them. Same with my autographed AP print, but I could not go back and ask for a COA because the dealer had shut down years before. It's a tough topic, I'm sure the law has created endless headaches, at the same time I've seen "fabulous fakes" plague pretty much every hobby I've been involved with, so no easy solutions I think.

Seems like the workaround is to forge certificates of authenticity along with the forged signatures.
