It might be also that he has a limited amount of work produced. Personally, I feel that Frank Cho and Adam Hughes are on par with Stevens work. You mean artistically or how much their covers sell for? I don't know anything about prices but I do like Cho's artwork a lot and wish he would produce more comics as opposed to just covers. Adam Hughes's work I've never been able to stand at all. Something about his style just turns me off. I mean the beauty of the figures. They are 3 of a kind.

I'm trying to figure out why this comic has '414 Geneva' stamped on the back. Not that it's a deal-breaker, I might still be tempted to get it but I'm wondering what it means.

there's a Geneva in Wisconsin and Illinois...maybe just where it was originally sold? Google tells me there's also a newsstand that still exists in Dorchester, MA called Geneva News, but that seems less likely with the '414'

The ad indicates that the book predates zip codes. Depending on the age of the book there’s a small chance it could be a phone number.

Might be an address; Google brings up several Geneva Streets, Avenues and Lanes, just in Illinois. The original owner of the comic might have stamped his comics, to prove they were his, or to have them returned, if lost. It's definitely not the map coordinates for Geneva Switzerland, which is 46.2044 degrees N, by 6.1432 degrees E.
Maybe it's where the Martians will land....or where the spy meets his contact.

Yeah, I immediately assumed it was a street address too ...likely of the comic's original owner. Like, 414 Geneva Drive, Detroit or something.

414 is a Marvel Universe where all the heroes are based in Geneva instead of New York. They take on the Cuckoo King and the Chocolateer.

Thanks for the responses, a dealer-friend told me the 414 might be referring to the date (April 14) as the cover was dated May-June 1958. If Geneva is a location it would be the first time I saw a stamp with a location in that manner.

At least it wasn't Bonnett's Bookstore in Dayton, they've been in the back issue business (and books) forever, but they do this to every comic... There still in business, still going strong and still stamping everything that comes in the store. -M

I won't get into details but for me Hughes is the odd man out even in regard to this particular aspect.

interesting... so looks like Bonnets books has no web site, only social media.. they are open 6-9p... sometimes... they seem to post on facebook every day they are open on the day.
doesn't seem like a winning business model, but hey I guess if they're around it is.

Personally, I like Hughes' work and have going back to the days of Maze Agency and JLI. I'd much rather see him do story work than just covers, but he just isn't fast enough to do anything but special projects and short term stories. Plus, he makes boatloads just doing covers. Still, the Star Trek: Debt of Honor graphic novel he did looked sweet and he was very good with the likenesses, body language and expression, which helped the characters feel more real. I met him at a con in 1992 and he was a tremendously nice guy. He wasn't quite at Comic Book Rock Star level yet, but was getting there He did look as I expected, for an artist who seemed to specialize in cheesecake. Still, he was good to everyone around him and the fans. I haven't really read any of Cho's material; just seen covers, so no real opinion. I love Stevens when he would do story work, as his training and experience in animation really serves the story well, with the right kinds of detail. The pin-up stuff is nice and there is usually a sense of fun to it; but he also knows how to do the perfect image to convey an idea, like this Mr Monster image he did.... A pulp hero defending kids from a monster. Oh, and the kids are the Little Rascals/Our Gang bunch (and Petey!), which makes it cooler. I used to have the Eclipse poster and always wanted to put it up in my child's bedroom, so they knew someone was always watching out for them, against monsters. Sadly, never had a reason to keep it, since kids never happened. Would have loved to have seen Stevens draw a Mr Monster story..even just a short one.

Dave Stevens I've read mainly the Rocketeer - did he do many other series or individual stories? Otherwise I know him as a cover artist. I like his style, which I think has a retro influence without being limited to only that.
Frank Cho, I don't think is a great writer. My attitude towards his work is actually the opposite of what it is for most creators: usually I'd much rather see people doing their own, independent creations, but from everything I've seen, I really think Cho's style would be best suited to doing old-fashioned, 70s-style Marvel superhero comics. I haven't read Liberty Meadows because I'm afraid I would find it cringe-worthy but I suppose I should try it one of these days.
Adam Hughes really turns me off. His characters look they were copied from People magazine or whatever the equivalent is these days. I now many people love his stuff but I find it cheap and ugly looking.

Just a reminder that this is the 'quick question' thread and not the 'why I love/hate artist X' thread.
