Does anyone know when the triangle era of the Superman books ended ? The last issues with triangles are cover dated Jan 2002, so it likely finished at the end of 2001. |

Do you guys and gals still use eBay as much as you did in the past? The landscape has utterly changed in the last few years, from what I can see. Where once almost all auctions started at 99p/99c now most have a starting price almost as high as the buy it now prices. This seems to be a change in the last few years, and is a massive change from the first 20 years or so of eBay. A similar thread covering the same topic. Essentially it means very few bargains. I looked at one seller's pages, and across 6 pages of auctions he has 0 bids, and this now seems normal. No one is taking any risks because eBay just relists the same crap week after week after week for free, with everyone expecting to receive the same prices as MyComicShop! (whose prices have gone up a LOT in recent years too) |

Wasn't it a point of debate- whether Kirby told Lee what he was going to draw before he drew it or not, and whether Lee had any input? Lee had more affection for FF and Spidey than any other books, so you'd imagine he liked to have his voice heard, to some extent. I'm happy to say it was predominantly a Kirby creation, but I don't buy the scripter/editor not being aware of plots before the art showed up- Lee wasn't that disinterested, especially as scripting a book where you haven't discussed the plot is harder to do, so I'd say the phone call you mentioned surely had to happen. Not saying no input, but let's say Lee suggested bringing in Dr. Doom, Kirby says he has an idea for Doom to steal Surfers powers. Stan might suggest something which Kirby brings in, or not. But it is a three issue arc, so while Stan might have an idea of the overall plot, he might not know what is in a particular book until he gets the art with Kirby's notes. He never knew of the Silver Surfer until he saw it on the page. Other issues there could be more interactive. These 18 issues or so feel very much like pure Kirby. Some after, like the Thing going against them or the issue with all the guest stars feel like Stan having a hand in it. |

(whose prices have gone up a LOT in recent years too) I haven't used eBay in over a decade and rarely used it to buy comics (a few graphic novels). The one time I recall I did, I bid low on a DC 100-PG comic (don't recall which) and won the auction, with a bid of about a buck or a buck-and-a-quarter. The seller then came back with a response that it was badly water damaged. BS! They just didn't want to have to fulfill the auction for the low bid. Back then, most of what I saw were people selling things in lots and if I was looking for anything, it was usually one or two issues and I had better luck buying directly from dealers. Graphic novels were a different story, as I would find things like the A Long Tomorrow Moebius album, from the Epic line, or Den from Richard Corben, or the 5th volume of the Titan Books reprint of Zenith. What I see from marketplace listings are people selling at top prices and wonder why people don't buy. Sometimes in business you have to discount to move merchandise. Also, the true worth of an item is what the buyer is willing to pay and the seller is willing to except. Sometimes it is better to take less now, rather than wait forever and get nothing. I don't collect anymore, so it is all worthless, to me. Even in my collecting days, $10 was about as high as I would go for any comic published after 1950 and $30 for anything before. The one exception to that was that I paid $100 for Exciting Comics #9, the first appearance of the Black Terror. I tried to talk the seller down to $70. I should have walked away, because after I got it home and didn't think much of the stories within (including the Terror), and definitely thought it wasn't worth a C-note. By contrast, I had a couple of Captain Marvels (a Whiz, with the first appearance of the 3 Lieutenant Marvels and a Captain Marvel Adventures, from the middle of the Monster Society of Evil serial) that I got for about $25 to 30 and they were worth the price. I never did that again. It just wasn't worth it to me and I didn't have the income to throw around money like that on old comics. Food and rent were worth more. The only time I broke the first rule was the first appearance of Electra, which I think cost me $18.00. I did sell some Bronze Age stuff for way more than I paid. When Thanos appearances, Deathlok and Guardians of the Galaxy took off, because of new series, I sold back some of that for store credit and paid for about 3 months worth of new comics. I don't think I paid more than a dollar for any single issue; less for most of them. Maybe one or two of the Starlin Captain Marvel. |

Yes!
Simple reason....I get the better deal there, when compared to buying the same books from a specialized back-issue dealer. Sometimes well over 75% less. In that instance, I don't care if the price doesn't start at 0.99, if ultimately, I get a $40 book for $10.

I find I have alot more luck with 'buy it now' items on ebay these days than auctions. You really have to be live online at the end of the auction to win any that have competing bids.
I generally compare ebay's going rate with mycomicshop and mile high and buy where I get the better deal.

Took me 6 years to get one of these....and I've only seen 2 other copies in the subsequent 7 years....and one had a $5k asking price because it was CGC. It's the rarest of the Warriors comics

Maybe the situation is better in the US than UK... if there was a book worth $40 on there, no way would the starting bid be below $30. Maybe it would be $60, getting relisted for the next 5 years, more likely 😅 |

I’ve learnt that lesson! I really like the TV series Alias (I watched it for the first time a while back). Apparently, there was an official magazine which ran for at least 2 years. I’d like to read it for some insight into the show, interviews with the cast, etc. Now I keep coming across individual issues, including the first issue, but with postage and packing, it would really cost in the long run. I don’t think many issues were published, so I’d rather wait to see it as a complete run. I mean, the first issue of the magazine is £30.59 on eBay. There was also an official magazine devoted to Lost (another show I only saw for the first time in recent years). Again, individual issues are pricey. So I’m waiting to see a complete collection, that magazine also didn’t run for long. |

It only costs 7-10x on eBay or mile high. If you go to comic shops or comic shows , many books are in dollar bins or way below what eBay is asking.

I use eBay a lot -- almost every week -- mostly for music stuff, but also for old comics, and I frequently see comic bargains that sellers in the U.S. are offering that you'd never see from UK sellers. Time was, I used to order a fair few old comics from the U.S. because even with the international shipping it worked out cheaper than buying from UK sellers. But those days are long gone. A combination of outrageous increases in American shipping costs and a weakening of the pound against the dollar have put paid to that.

It only costs 7-10x on eBay or mile high. If you go to comic shops or comic shows , many books are in dollar bins or way below what eBay is asking. That seems to be true for some areas... sadly mine is not one of them. While Boston Comicon is a fairly big thing now, it's very much a pop culture event and costs ALOT to even get in. Its been quite a while where there was a show around here when one could actually buy things. |

I want to check out the US Police Academy comics (published by Marvel). Seems the majority are in the US, and, as you show, shipping costs and a weakening of the Pound have put paid to that. I’m finding the same with the magazines I mentioned. Quite a few US sellers, but even with a fairly decent price for some, the shipping costs are prohibitive. In a lot of cases, mainstream stuff seems easier to find from UK sellers. I’m sure if I looked up various high-profile Marvel comics, chances are a few UK sellers would be offering them, but niche stuff like Police Academy comics and the like seem a little hard to come by. |
