With Relativity Media filing for bankruptcy, pre-production on the remake of The Crow has ground to a screeching halt. The long-gestating remake of 1994 adaptation of the James O’Barr comic has suffered from false starts and star defections (most notably Bradley Cooper who dropped out in 2013—see “James O’Barr Creates New Poster for The Crow”). Corin Hardy is directing the current iteration of the remake, which was to have been the first film produced at the new Pinewood Studio facilities in Cardiff, Wales. Jack Huston has been cast in the title role and Andrea Riseborough is set to play the villain Top Dollar.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an entire production unit has left the project along with several “heads of departments.” Although Relativity is supposedly still eager to begin shooting the remake of The Crow this fall, the studio’s financial position appears very bleak with $361 million in debts and heavily mortgaged assets that may worth as little as $150 million according to Variety, which quoted one of Relativity’s lenders describing the company as a “hopelessly insolvent enterprise.”

If Relativity’s financials are that bad, it will be very hard for the studio to hang on to the project as it goes through bankruptcy proceedings.
