No Maze Agency? No Ms. Tree? I guess detective books aren't fourcolours bag, which is fair enough. No westerns either. Yeah, where's Bat Lash?

Umm...wow. Thanks for discussing my list, folks.
I decided to do this because of a similar list that Rolling Stone did in early 2014. I didn't really like it, so I made my own.
Really excited that you took the time to check in on us and respond! Whenever one person makes a list, that's really all he/she can do. No need to apologize for that. A good policy, but you could start an entire debate over what Alan Moore's best work was Defining "non-superhero" is a tricky affair, to say the least. It seems like the bulk of your list is focused on more grounded real-world stories (thus the general lack of sci-fi, war, fantasy, humor, adventure, and anthro titles), but then you get Hellboy, Usagi Yojimbo, and Bone thrown in. An oversight that must be corrected The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa is an outright classic as well. Looking forward to giving it to you If you have the inkling, I hope you'll look around the rest of the site. We're a pretty friendly, knowledgeable community, and your tastes and opinions would be well respected/appreciated here As with any list, no one's going to agree on everything, but there's no doubt that your selections are quality works that speak to a wider expertise of non-big two modern day indie classics.

As far as I can tell he's not including licensed comics or small pieces of a large series, for example issues 121-170 of a particular title because it had a particularly good writer. He seems to be judging titles strictly from beginning to end. So we're not likely to see Conan or Scrooge on the list.

It would have been nice to see Hitman on that list.

Hitman is very much a superhero comic. It's in the superhero world but he never uses the powers that was part of his origin. It's a super-powered protagonist and set in a superhero world. And, honestly, Gosh! This list needs more English language factory-system produced comics published in the last 20 years by huge corporations! would not be my first complaint. (Although I like Hitman an awful lot.)

Dude, Hitman is a great read no matter who produced it.

It would definitely make my top 100 superhero comics list!

I tend not to pay much attention to any lists on the internet or any other media, whether it be comics, food, movies, etc. Almost always it's the opinion of one person or a small group of people. Even ones that people seem to regard as having some validity because they come from a national publication (Rolling Stone for instance) or organization, unless it's based on actual polling, it's just someone's opinion which is little more valid than my own. I do read these specific type of lists, because you often get some good recommendations from them (see our own list back on CBR last year... or was it 2 years ago by now.. Time flies.), but am never bothered if my favourites are not included, because I know they are subjective.

I think the ones that are a result of actual polling are usually the worst. Maybe I'm an elitist, but I think the Eisners do a better job of picking the best comics than CBR users. The Academy picks better movies than the Spike Guy's Choice voters. Of course I have to find a reviewer whose taste matches my own, but once I do, I'll tend to prefer it to popular opinion.

I tend to do the same, with the caveat that I always replace the term "best" with "favorite" when I check out the lists, and I know my tastes will not always match others, so I am non-plussed when they make different selections than I would. I am always keeping an eye out for gems I have not heard of or overlooked. Reading year end best of lists in 2014 turned me onto things like Five Ghosts and Prophet. Reading folks 12 Days selections here always turns me on to books I would not have discovered otherwise (things like the Guns of the Dragon, Scare Tactics, and others, and things like Corto Maltese, from similar lists here). I read through the European Comics thread here for the very same reason. Every list has its faults and people will like things I consider stinkers, or hold them up as "best" but they will often like things I will like as well but haven't discovered yet. Every time I think I am fairly well read and widely read in comics, I get schooled by folks like our members who will bring a whole new world of reading possibilities to my attention. The key is understanding the scope and limitations of the list in question and who is generating it. That goes a long way to understanding what selections are made and why, and gives some insight as to what you might find within. It's all biased, that's a given, but identifying the bias is what makes the list informative. -M

In case of the CBR list I meant the one done by shaxper for the Classics board. The general CBR polls held little to no interest to me.

Oh yeah, agreed, which is why I can agree with a more curated group of pollsters much more as well. Our own "best of" lists will usually comprise with about 50% of my favorites and 25% stuff I want to check out, which isn't bad considering how varied all our tastes are. But a general CBR poll would basically align with the Diamond top 100, so no need to even look at the poll.
