Over the years some have opined that it's based on Joseph Hirsch's 1940s painting "High Visibility Wrap", which was featured in the 1945 book Men Without Guns If it wasn't, that's some next-level synchronicity (somebody get Sting on the line!). The original uncropped, uncolored art was published in Mark Evanier's "KIRBY: King of Comics." Some of the finer details were lost in the primitive printing of 1954, but it's still a striking piece. This is Kirby inking himself, a chore he apparently detested, which is a shame, as I think he was a fine inker. I love that cover, too, but it strikes me that the helmet and the gun both look German.

I love that cover, too, but it strikes me that the helmet and the gun both look German. Nah. The head-gear is a standard-issue "steel pot," still in use when I went through basic training in '85 (and replaced with Kevlar head-gear the following year). As for the weapon, possibly captured from an enemy combatant? I'm not too well-versed on WWII-era weapons, but Kirby certainly would have been. One more thing and I'll shut up. Sporting an Oct. '54 cover date, it's very likely that Jack composed this piece very near to the ten year anniversary of D-Day. Perhaps that explains why it seems to stand out among his work of the period.

Yes, likely a deliberate recall (of an image that was not obscure and had been reproduced in not only that 1945 book but from what I have read also in magazines), as a commemoration. Using that image also gives Foxhole #1 a documentary or real-life feel.

I very much regret missing out on the vote last night that delivered MDG's great cover as our winner this week. It was a great choice! Maybe to make up for circumstances which kept me away I'll put forward another Nick Cardy cover for the current theme. The man was a cover genius!

Are those the same people on the beach on the covers of Sub-Mariner #18 and #30?

The swimsuit issues were always a fun one to buy when Amazing Heroes did these...

Sheesh! You want me to be posting a beach-themed cover in the middle of winter? When I'm waking up to sub-zero temperatures? Fortunately, this cover sums things up nicely (just reverse the hemispheres):
