Bernie Madoff dead at 82 Edit * I guess there will be no comments because of the - Don't say negative comments - rule. Just to clarify how that works: 1. Don't be unnecessarily mean. Criticize a person's actions with specificity and civility instead of summarily writing off the person as a whole. 2. Criticizing what they've done shouldn't be done in a thread that exists for the sole purpose of paying respects to the recently deceased. So if someone would like to start a thread specifically discussing Mr. Madoff and his crimes, they're welcome to it. Just play nice. Remember that it's not about protecting Mr. Madoff's feelings or believing his reputation deserves to be protected; it's about not tarnishing our own reputation and sullying this community with ugliness.

Here's an RIP for you.
The forty human beings killed in mass shootings in the United States over the past four months.
Wait. Check that. Those 40 people. They've been killed not in the last four months, nor even the last four weeks.
No, those human beings were killed in the last 13 days.
Another 90+ wounded.
And RIP also to the 11 police officers shot and killed in the line of duty in the first three months of 2021.
And to the 213 civilians shot dead by the police in that same time period.

R.I.P. Helen McCrory. McCrory was excellent as Aunt Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders. Also well known as Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter films and as Madame Kali in Penny Dreadful. 52 is ridiculously young.

Yeah, RIP. I have to say, though, that I'm amazed at the longevity of some of the legendary Mad contributors. When Mort Drucker's passing was reported last year, I recall being a bit surprised as I thought he'd already died years earlier. The fact that Al Jaffee recently celebrated his 100th birthday just brings a smile to my face.

Something good in the water at the MAD offices.

Seeing announcements from several FB groups that actor and stuntman Felix Silla passed today at the age of 84. He's probably best known to most of us as the guy who did the physical performance (not the voices) for Cousin Itt in the Addams Family and Twiki in Buck Rogers. RIP.

Silla got to double up, in one episode of the second season, as both Twiki and Odee-X a man that Buck meets while escorting a diplomat to a conference. He also portrayed an ewok, in Return of the Jedi, appeared in Spaceballs, Batman Returns as one of the penguins, portrayed a Talosian in "The Cage," in Star Trek, physically performed the Cylon Lucifer, in Battlestar Galactica, was a performer in the Krofft shows Liddsville and HR Pufnstuf and did some stunt work, including in Howard the Duck, The Hindenburg, The Towering Inferno, Poltergeist, The Golden Child and ET.
McRory I enjoyed as Cherie Blair, in The Queen but didn't get to see a lot of her work. She was married to Damian Lewis, who I have just been rewatching in band of Brothers. Fine actress, cut down way to soon by that damn disease.

I work for a companion branch of the company where the Indianapolis shooting occurred, though not in that city or facility. It was a big facility that employed a lot of people, who, I am sure are still reeling from events. We have been essential workers all through the pandemic and then something like this occurs, on top of things. I didn't know anyone there, but my thoughts go out to them as they cope.

RIP Jim Steinman, who passed at age 73. He was just mentioned here on the forums in conjunction with Meatloaf, and his lyrics ot Meatloaf's hits may be his best knowm work, but by no means the full extent of his contributions to music and performance.

R. I. P. Walter Mondale. Former Vice-President, Senator from Minnesota, Ambassador to Japan, and Democratic nominee for President in 1984. Whatever you may have thought of his politics, he dedicated his life to public service and, as best I can tell, never had a hint of scandal around him.

His work had that epic quality that I enjoy, with the frentic pace and the fast piano bits, the epic voices. You could spot his music as soon as you heard the piano kick in...

Whatever you may have thought of his politics, he dedicated his life to public service and, as best I can tell, never had a hint of scandal around him. Ironically, I was just watching the HBO mini-series, From the earth to the Moon, with the episode about the Apollo One fire. Mondale was the junior senator on a panel holding hearings about the tragedy and he was noted for grilling James Webb, head of NASA, pretty hard for problems at NASA and North American Aviation, with the Phillips Report, a critical report that was given to him by ABC Science Editor and reporter Jules Bergman (though that is not shown in the episode). Mondale has ben credited with elevating the office of the Vice-President into one with amore substantial role in working with the President to manage their policy agenda. Regardless of politics, he di much to make the Vice President as important to guiding the nation as the President, which is what you would expect in an organization like that. Before that, the VP was often a thankless job, unless the VP carved out his own role (like LBJ and the Space Program) Hubert Humphrey, who was one of Mondale's mentors, was notoriously shut out of decision making in the Johnson Administration. Got to hear Mondale speak at the Univ of Illinois, when he ran for the Presidency, in 1984. Had some good things to say; but, it was a Reagan crowd, as that was pretty much the climate of the school.
