RIP to British actor Dennis Waterman.... Waterman co-starred with John Thaw in the seminal 1970s police series, The Sweeney, as DS George Carter. He followed that up with another massively popular series, Minder, playing Terry McCann, opposite George Cole (young Scrooge, in A Christmas Carol/Scrooge, with Alistair Sim as the elder Scrooge). If that wasn't enough, he came back to tv screens, in the new millennium for the detective series New Tricks, as former DS Gerry Standing, the thieftaker. Waterman also sang the theme song for both Minder and new Tricks, which led to a running sketch on the comedy series, Little Britain, where David Walliams played a version of Waterman (depicted as tiny, next to oversized props), as his agent gives him offers of new roles, but he only wants to take them if he can "write the theme tune, play the theme tune, sing the theme tune." Waterman appeared on stage, in a cameo, interrupting the sketch, for Comic Relief. Waterman began acting in 1960, at the age of 12 and appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as playing Oliver Twist, in Oliver!, in London, for which a cast recording was done, in 1961. He was later married to Rula Lenska, known in the US only for her VO5 commercials and Johnny Carson asking, "Who the hell is Rula Lenska? in his monologue, which became a recurring gag. They divorced, with accusations from her that he was abusive. he later admitted to hitting her. His daughter, Hannah Waterman, appeared in several episodes, as a detective, who though Gerry Standing was her father (DNA tests prove otherwise). Here he is (with John Thaw) on Morecombe and Wise....

Not a global celebrity, but a passing I think worthy of noting:
John Cripps, the British-Australian horticulturist responsible for breeding both the Pink Lady and Sundowner apples (two of my favourite apples), has died at the age of 95.

Love the Pink Lady apples. I salute the man and his contribution to my taste buds!

RIP to British actor Dennis Waterman....
We didn't get The Sweeney on our local tv stations in Canada, but Minder was shown on CBC though the early to mid-1980s and I was a huge fan - it's probably my favourite series of the decade.

The Destroyer is no more! RIP to actor Fred Ward, co-star of The Right Stuff, Tremors, Uncommon Valor, Naked Gun 33 1/3 and star of one of my favorites, Remo Williams, The Adventure Begins. Loved Ward; great character actor, always interesting and entertaining, with a wide range of roles, from one of Clint Eastwood's allies, in Escape From Alcatraz, to a former tunnel rat with PTSD, in Uncommon Valor, to Gus Grissom, to Henry Miller, in Henry & June. I like to think his death is fake and he is getting thrown around by a little Korean man, as we speak.

Massive bummer about Fred Ward, who I always thought should be a much bigger star than he ever was. That may be stoked by the fact that Gus Grissom is a major hero of mine and Ward was excellent portraying him in The Right Stuff. I also have inordinate fondness for both Remo Williams and Tremors.

There is no such thing as inordinate fondness for Tremors.

Tremors is an underappreciated modern classic.

I feel that way about the Remo Williams movie . It should have been a franchise of movies.
