Bill Pitman, studio guitarist par excellence and member of the Wrecking Crew, has passed at the ripe old age of 102. Pitman was heard on not only such hit songs as "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (on which he played ukulele)," "Be My Baby," and "Mr. Tambourine Man," but also the soundtracks of TV shows like "The Wild, Wild, West," "Bonanza," and Movies like "MASH," "Dirty Dancing," and "Goodfellas." You may well not know it, but you've heard countless hours of Mr. Pitman's music. Small correction: Pitman was not on The Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man": that was Jerry Cole on rhythm guitar and the Byrds' own Roger McGuinn on lead guitar. Pitman was on Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walking" though, which is one of my favourites that he was involved in.

RIP to German director Wolfgang Petersen, who passed away on Aug 12. Probably best known for Das Boot and The Never Ending Story, he also directed the sci-fi film Enemy Mine, the Clint Eastwood film In The Line of Fire, Air Force One, Shattered, The Perfect Storm, and Outbreak. At one point, he was attached to direct a crossover between Superman and Batman, which was supposed to lead into a whole DCU franchise; but, the deal was scrapped for the mess we have now. Really liked to have seen what he would have done with it, instead of Snyder.

It is the also the most claustrophobic movie I've ever watched.

There's already a thread on the Classic Comics board but I want to note here the passing of Tom Palmer, one of the best ink-slingers in the history of comics.

I didn't realize until googling him just now that he was also the father of Tom Palmer Jr., author of Wizard Magazine's long-running "Palmer's Picks" feature.

Science fiction author and critic Alexei Panshin has passed away at age 82. Probably best known for this 1968 Nebula-Award winning novel Rite of Passage.

I just read Rite of Passage earlier this year - good book, and a good writer. RIP, Mr. Panshin.

R. I. P. Hall-of-Fame quarterback Len Dawson. Dawson led the Kansas City Chiefs to two Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl IV against the favored Minnesota Vikings. Dawson WAS the Kansas City Chiefs and I have some memories of him playing against the Oakland Raiders at the very end of his career.

Dawson was a little under-sized at the time at 6'0" 190 pounds. Now he'd be too small to even be considered.

It won't mean much to anyone here but me, but country musician Luke Bell died this last week at age 32. Bell only had one major album release, but it was a doozy. His 2016 self-titled album was among the best country albums of the decade. Maybe longer. Serious old-school vibe without being self-consciously retro. It paved the way for Bell to open for acts like Willie Nelson and Dwight Yoakam. Unfortunately he suffered from severe bipolar disorder and would simply disappear for long periods of time, hopping freight trains. And then he'd reappear and look like he might re-establish his career. He'd been missing after a trip to Tucson with a fellow musician and was found dead yesterday. It's not clear the cause of death, though it's strongly hinted that it may have been suicide. Dude was a super talented performer and a very strong songwriter.

Just saw the news that Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union (whose reforms basically opened the way for its demise), has died at the age of 91.

R. I. P. Earnie Shavers. Two-time Heavyweight challenger and regarded as one of the hardest punchers in boxing. Shavers rocked Ali in a losing title match in 1977 and dropped Larry Holmes with a devastating hit in a losing challenge in 1979. One of the great heavyweights to not win a title.
