RIP to author, academic, social critic, journalist, advocate Barbara Ehrenreich, author of the book Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America. I read that a few years back. Great book, extremely thought-provoking. Rest in peace, Ms. E.

RIP to writer/novelist Peter Straub, who passed today at age 79. -M Never read his work, since I'm not a horror guy; but shelved and sold his books.

I haven't read Straub either but I've always meant to and have a few of his books on my shelves, waiting for the time I start getting back into modern horror fiction, a genre I've neglected since the early 1990s. But I do want to read his Ghost Story and a few others, including his collaborations with Stephen King.
Barbara Ehrenreich is another American writer I've had on my list for a while but have yet to get to.

Just saw the news that Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union (whose reforms basically opened the way for its demise), has died at the age of 91. One of the most important statesman of his time, sadly neglected by his successors, his former peers, and the public at large. I think history will raise his stature above most of his contemporaries on the world stage.

I saw that news late at night (my time), so I was too tired to comment any more about it, but yeah, he was an immensely important historical figure who made an outsized contribution to ending what's called the Cold War - not least of which involved keeping the Soviet hardliners (the Putins of their day) in check long enough for the changes to become inevitable.

RIP to writer/novelist Peter Straub, who passed today at age 79. -M Never read his work, since I'm not a horror guy; but shelved and sold his books. Ghost Story is the only horror novel I ever found genuinely scary and the only work of fiction that ever gave me nightmares. That takes talent!
Cei-U! I summon the chill factor!

Longtime CNN anchor Bernard Shaw has passed away at age 82. Shaw was a staple at the CNN anchor desk for two decades. Possibly best known for his infamous question to Mike Dukakis about his support of the death penalty and the rape of his wife during the 1988 Presidential debate.

Rest In Peace Queen Elizabeth...reigned for almost 70 years.
Only a couple days ago I saw her welcoming Liz Truss, the new Prime Minister.
I'm feeling this one....

It's strange to love someone we don't know, but I make an exception for Queen Elizabeth. She had all the grace, seriousness and self-discipline I expect from someone whose job it is to be a national symbol. She also had a subdued sense of humour betraying a sharp mind. I'm going to miss her.
RIP, your majesty.

She's been on my £ sterling notes for my lifetime, and a large part of my (British Commonwealth) stamp collection features her. I'll miss her.

I'm not particularly interested in the celebrity of the British monarchy the way a lot of folks are, but I recognize the historical significance of the milestone, and I offer my condolences to a family for their lost loved ones. That is a sentiment that transcends nationality.
