Oh, Mr Conroy. God rest your soul.
As many will no doubt say, the definitive Batman voice. Ever since his debut, I “read his voice in my head” when reading a Batman comic.

Oooof. That one really sucks. I have to join the chorus in paying respects to the definitive Batman voice of at least a generation. He was great as both Bruce AND Batman without overdoing one or the other, and he is definitely the voice I hear in my head when reading Batman lines.
Conroy and Hammill are my favorite Batman and Joker duo, bar none.
RIP Mr. Conroy, and my condolences to his friends, family, and fans the world over.

And now another one. Watermelon-smashing comedian (Leo) Gallagher has passed away at 76.

I'm going to have a hard time coping with the idea that Conroy will never voice Batman again. The world is a little darker tonight.

Here to be sad along with everyone else. I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Conroy when he came to a signing at a WB Store (remember those?) in Atlanta in 2000. He couldn't have been nicer, graciously allowed us to shoot video of our interaction, gave thoughtful answers to every question.
A long line snaked throughout the store and Mr. Conroy gave his full and unhurried attention to each fan. Just a swell guy.

I echo Mask of the Phantasm as the best Batman movie and his was the definitive performance in any medium, of any actor. NPR's obit says it well: he played him like a real person. They mentioned that everyone who came in to audition did it in the Michael Keaton whisper and they specifically didn't want to dot that, as it would sound too artificial. Conroy came in and did it in his normal voice, pitched slightly lower, and did Bruce slightly higher, but more like he was "performing" as Bruce. Batman felt real. He was trained at Juliard and was a friend and roommate to Robin Williams. I caught a little of him, without realizing it, on Tour of Duty, though I didn't watch it regularly.

Ouch. This one really hurts. Conroy is the voice I hear when I read Batman, both for Batman and Bruce Wayne. I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin at a con many years ago, and bought an original animation cel from BTAS which is framed with with a signed dedication from him. During his panel, he got asked to tell a particular story about 9/11 that, in his modesty, he was reluctant to tell, but he did anyway. I'm glad he did. I can't really do the story justice, but here is an abbreviated version: Kevin was in NY when the planes flew into the towers. Wanting to help, he called the volunteer hotline. They said they had enough searchers, but were desperately short of kitchen staff and asked if he had any restaurant experience. Kevin replied "I'm an actor. Of course, I have restaurant experience!" He went to work that night in the kitchen of a large Italian restaurant that had been taken over to feed the volunteers. Kevin commented on how eerily silent the place was, despite the number of people eating there. After three nights, he noticed one the men he had been working with in the kitchen was looking at him oddly. Kevin thought "This guy's recognised me." The man asked some questions, including "What do you do in the real world?" Kevin admitted he was an actor. The man then asked "But you're a particular sort of actor, aren't you?" Kevin replied "For the last few years, I've mostly been doing voice acting." "I knew it!" the man said excitedly. "You're Batman! We've got to tell the people there!" Kevin dismissively said "They're not going to want to know that". The man replied "Are you kidding me?!" He then stepped from the kitchen to the dining room and called out to the room "Do you know who has been cooking your food for the last three nights! Batman!" There was dead silence for several seconds, then a voice called out from the back of the room "Bullsh*t!" The man went "It's true!" The same voice called back "Prove it!" The man looked back through the door at Kevin, and Kevin stepped up to the serving hatch where he could be heard but not seen and, in his best Batman voice, projected "I am vengeance! I am the night! I am BATMAN!" Dead silence followed for several seconds, then the voice from the back of the room went "Holy sh*t! It IS Batman!". Kevin said he didn't know what happened, but something seemed to break at that point, and at that point conversation started flowing normally between the diners, and for the rest of his time there, the restaurant sounded more like a normal cafeteria than a morgue.

Sometimes death strikes close to home. My brother-in laws's long time live in girlfriend Chris passed away this morning at age 51. She had long suffered chronic back pain and other health issue from an accident that caused quality of life issues, and they were getting worse, leading her doctors to try to adjust some of the pain meds she used, which were unfortunately opioid based. Turns out the source of the increased pain was not the back injuries but undiagnosed kidney failure, and she wound up in the ICU yesterday morning when her blood pressure crashed and her pulse became erratic, and despite their best efforts to flush her system of toxins and the opioids, she did not recover and her heart failed this morning. The doctors believe the combination of the kidney failure and the new pain meds being too strong started the cascade of organ failures (kindeys, lungs and eventually heart) which lead to her passing.
Hopefully she is in a better place now and no longer has to suffer through chronic pain and her body failing her.
