And Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive fame apparently no longer fits the "Or Alive" part.

I've read dozens of Chick tracts over the years. Every now & then I'll come across one lying on a sidewalk or something, though it's been a few years since that happened. When I went up to NW Arkansas for the Southern Baptist summer camp* in my 11th or maybe 12th summer, the bookstore had a slew of them for sale, probably for a nickel or maybe a dime each. I bought quite a few just to marvel at.
*Which obviously didn't really take in my case.

And Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive fame apparently no longer fits the "Or Alive" part. What's wrong with me that I laughed at your joke first, then felt bad about another human being dying? This is too bad, as I liked a number of their songs in the 80s and still have a couple of them on my mp3 player.

Apparently, Jack Chick died yesterday at age 92. He was sort of the Stan Lee of, uh, ultra-rightist arch-conversative sleaze in the form of what amounted to mini-comics. Hope he's enoying wherever it is he is. Kind of the R. Crumb of fundamentalism.

And Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive fame apparently no longer fits the "Or Alive" part. Sad to learn of his passing, and far too soon too. I remember listening to him being a guest on Boy George's radio show from a while back; having buried the hatchet of rivalry (Pete: "Boy George stole my look" George: "It's not who did it first, it's who did it better") it was really insightful to hear them talk about the LGBT scene of the early 80s in the UK, among other topics. "You Spin Me Round" will always be a classic.

For anyone that grew up in a Protestant, evangelical church-going environment, Jack Chick is sort of like that crazy uncle in your family who makes racist or other offensive comments at family gatherings. He's there, he's kind of embarrassing, you've learned to politely ignore him for the most part, but you still have an unexplainable affection for him even as anyone else outside your family would be completely shocked that such a human being can exist. There's definitely a sort of kitschy attraction to those comics, even (or especially) by those who are not Christian. It's sort of like the fundamentalist equivalent of porn or exploitation films. I came across these every now and then growing up as a kid, and I was never not entertained by them.
