Just saw the news that prolific Italian comic book writer Alfredo Castelli has passed at the age of 76 (the link is to his Wikipedia entry, because all of the obituaries I'm finding online are mostly in Italian). Castelli is perhaps best known among comics fans in Italy, much of Europe and beyond as the co-creator and principal writer of the popular Bonelli Editore series Martin Mystère, in which the titular character is a globe-trotting researcher and adventurer who solves scientific mysteries, which often puts him at odds with dark, conspiratorial forces. (I reviewed a number of Martin Mystère episodes over in the European Comics thread.) (Castelli pictured with his co-creation)

A big loss, I haven't read Martin Mystere or his other series the Gentlemen, but I've read the sci-fi series Gigantik where he did some work on and his Lieutenant Blueberry stories.

RIP to musician Mojo Nixon (born Neill Kirby McMillan Jr.), best known for his mix of rockabilly and punk (known as pychobilly), and the 1987 hit song "Elvis is Everywhere," a novelty song that dominated MTV airplay for a time. He was only 66.

R. I. P. Mojo Nixon. I will never forget the first time I heard “Elvis is Everywhere.” And who can forget “Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child?”
Mostly though I’ll remember him as a DJ on Sirius’ Outlaw Country channel. The Loon in the Afternoon. I think he’d appreciate that I’ll always remember that Mojo Nixon was a booger-eating moron.

R.I.P. to Aston "Family Man" Barrett: the Jamaican bass player and band leader. He was most famous as the bassist and band leader of Bob Marley's backing band The Wailers. He also played with The Hippy Boys and Lee Perry's The Upsetters. He was 77. Although he acquired the nickname "Family Man" before he had any children (it orignally referred to his role as band leader), he lived up to the name; fathering 41 children: 23 daughters and 18 sons.

BBC radio DJ and all round national treasure Steve Wright has died at age 69... www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-68287707Steve Wright's weekday afternoon Radio 1 show in the '80s and '90s was a must listen fixture for millions of Britons -- myself included! His witty and zany, quick-fire program, with its numerous highly quotable comedy characters like Sid the Manager and Mr. Angry, was a game changer for British radio. I have never met anyone who said they disliked the man or his show. He always came across as an immensely charming and genuinely nice guy too. He will be missed by literally millions of people in the UK. This small selection of remembrances in The Guardian speaks volumes about how much people the length and breadth of the nation liked him... www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2024/feb/14/readers-on-steve-wright-dj

R. I. P. Bob Edwards who was host of NPR's "Morning Edition" for 25 years. Edwards absolutely set the standard for NPR both for its journalism and for the general tone of the network.

William Post, inventor of Pop-Tarts, has died...at 96. Clearly I need to eat Pop-Tarts more often.

I hope the Russian press didn't have the gall to say he died unexpectedly.
Navalny was a real hero. He took a stand against the empire, knowing how it was likely to end, because it was the right thing to do.
