Which artists came close to making your list but didn't quite make the cut?
For me, it was:
6. Richard Corben
7. Tom Sutton
8. Jose Bea
9. Pablo Marcos
10. Mike Mignola
Again, I was primarily looking at Bronze Age horror work. I don't claim to have a broad knowledge of the genre across decades. Part of the fun of The Long Halloween for me is getting a better sample of horror from other decades.

I did not have any runner-up!
I've selected my top 5 Horror Artists of all-time and found 1 Comic Book / Illustration that was used in a Comic Book to prove my point awfully clear and why they deserved to be in the top 5 Horror Artists of all time.
I'm already prepared to make my statement this upcoming Friday!

Mignola's absence is to be expected as you said you were going for Bronze Age comics but to exclude Corbin from that is unexpected It's fair to say that at least one of my top five is not empirically better than Corben. I'll explain the choice when we get there. For the rest, it comes down to an issue of style and preference. Corben's artwork is powerful as all heck, but it lacks range, in my opinion. It's those same ingenious awkwardly soft-looking images in dark contexts that elicit a strange sensation of warmth, pathos, and sometimes sexuality where they are not supposed to belong. Powerful, but it registers the same note with me each time. The artists I chose offer a little more visual/emotional diversity. |

Biggest surprise for me: no EC artists. Jack Davis is probably my favorite artist of all time, and his monster art in the early 60s probably my favorite stuff by him, but it's not really horror or comics. Johnny Craig is one of my top 10 (or even 5) favorite comic artists of all time, but the horrific elements of his work isn't intrinsic to why I like him.
I'm not sure how Graham Ingels got pushed off the list (though I'll note here that I don't think any other artist used silhouettes more effectively).
And Toth, like Craig, does everything well, but doesn't make my top five horror. Ditto many from the Goodwin era of Warren. (That said, my number five pick also does everything well, but his horror work at Warren blows everything out of the water.)
Considered Greg Irons and Jack Jackson, but don't really like them that much.

My runners up were mainly people from EC, simply because I don't know enough about them. I mean, I can pick art from Wood or Severin or Feldstein out of a lineup, but if you put an EC horror cover in front of me and asked me if it was Craig or Ingels or Davis, I couldn't say, even though I know the cover would be great.
Corben, Tom Sutton, Steve Ditko also didn't make my list but were in consideration. As were golden age artists like L.B. Cole, Lee Elias, and Don Heck.
Francesco Francavilla was on my list until I realized he wasn't eligible.

I'll third Francavilla, if he was eligible he might have made my top 5. Jock would have been on my list of "new" horror artists as well.
