I don't believe he could fly in space. In the first Brave and the Bold team-up story he astrally projects (or something) back home to Mars, but I don't know if this was something he did every day. I don't remember any comic ever showing MM flying in space, and some HOM stories suggest that he needed a spaceship to get there physically. The "astral travel" thing would have been a very Burroughsian solution to MM's problem, but I don't think it was used more than once or twice. In Steve Englehart's JLA-retcon, Superman offers to fly the Martian back to his world-- an easy solution to J'onn's problem, but not one that 1950s scripters would've acknowledged as a possibility. By that time J'onn has come to think of Earth as a second home and declines the Man of Steel's offer. Maybe he hadn't been in space pre-Crisis, and they had him using a space suit as late as Invasion, but he's been in space unaided plenty since then in Ostranders MM series and JL and such. I'd buy he didn't want to see Mars as a wasteland after every one else died...

He definitely CAN'T fly in space early on.. the origin recap (in every 6 pager from Detective so far I've read) explains how he can't go home since Prof. Erdel accidently teleported him to Earth. If he could fly in space, he could just go home.
He hasn't had any indication that he can contact Mars in any way through the first 6 or 7 stories.
That's pretty much the only thing he can't do, though.

J'onn does eventually contact Mars, though, as we meet his parents and his brother T'omm in later issues of the Detective run.

Bob Haney's B & B was tied to current continuity a surprising amount of the time, huh? Other than the mix-up with Green Arrow's money and Earth Two Wildcat it's generally pretty spot on. You can tell Haney or Boltinoff always researched the newer characters: Kamandi, the Demon, Richard Dragon etc...

T'omm later had a very long run at CBR. Also, Myspace. And was a notorious womanizer.
