Per Bleeding Cool, the following trades had been solicited ot the book trade (which has a longer lead time for ordering than the direct market) but not through Diamond, but have been cancelled before release....
In Shax's review thread we wondered who would want a Wild Dog collection, and the answer is probably not enough people since it got cancelled.
Sucks that 2 Showcase collections are among the cancelled and the 80s Omega Men and Dr. Fate stuff.

Makes me wonder if the end is nigh for the Showcase program. I haven't bought any in quite a while, but I would hate to see them go, nonetheless.

Damn shame about the showcase books, though. I love having stuff like My Love and Weird War Tales collected.

They can call them whatever the heck they want, as long as they continue to put silver age stuff in some sort of format. There HAS to be a market for it, doesn't there?

Not if they are cancelling books in the work, it means initial order projections are not passing the profitability threshold. Target demographics for most products is 18-34 year olds. The Silver Age ended before 34 year olds were born. There is no nostqalgia factor to push sales on that in the most desirable demographic, and the other demograhics usually do not generate enough sales to merit the kind of print runs needed to turn a profit on the material. Plus, a lot of it has been available in other formats, and what has not been reprinted is really niche products that have sales driven by nostalgia, remove the nostalgia because the material is older than the audience now and you have a market without enough demand to sustain it. Hardcore collectors will likely go for the original collections, those interested in collections have most of the material that has been released in print already in some ofrmat or another and are not likely to buy the same material yet again...so who's left to buy the Silver Age. Not new fans, their nostalgia period is the post-Bronze Age. The key stuff-the early Spidey, X-Men, Avengers etc. will stay in print as there is demand for that stuff, but the niche stuff...less and less likely with each passing year. -M |

But it seems like Roy THomas' Fiction House line is continuing, and they almost finished a line of, like, 19 AGC Archives. I'd assume there was less nostalgic interest in that stuff.
My primary interest, collection-wise, is stuff I can't just go grab out of the dollar bins. So it's sad to see DC ignoring the Silver, Golden, and whatever you call the period betweeen the Silver and Golden Ages where nobody cared about superheroes. (The grown-up age?)
Maybe the editors are getting older too?

It's my experience that only a small percentage of comics cost a lot. Most of the bronze age and up you can get for less than what a new comic costs today.

I was able to put together an entire run of Master of Kung Fu for an average of less than $1/issue, and I also did the entire run of New Mutants for less than $56 total. Sure, I got lucky in that I'd picked up #98 for cover price years ago before anyone actually cared about Deadpool (I liked the character as originally conceived, so I figured I would grab his first appearance when I could), but the majority of those issues were bought in "5 for $1" bundles at Half-Price Books, while the most I paid for any single issue being $2 for #1. Granted, it did require having access to multiple sources of supply for books and a willingness and ability to travel, but I was able to complete both runs in less than 2 years each. |
