I was thinking about how Cei-U is done with his Earth-2 stuff, and them looking at the Annotated Conan, which obviously isn't done yet (but will be some day).
It would be a real shame to see that stuff wander off and be hard to find... what if we had a section JUST for those type of threads? That way, new people (or just people who are looking for references) would be able to find them quickly and comment or ask questions easily.
I would propose such a section would be closed to new threads, but open to replies.. .so that only the mod can move stuff there, but anyone can read and respond. Thoughts?
Just to give you an idea, threads I was thinking of that would move to this new section(apologies if I missed anything. just giving you the idea):
Cei-U's two Earth 2 Threads Shax's completed Review Threads (PotA, Magnus, Wizard, Killraven... maybe one or two others) JLA 100-150 (Action Ace) RR's complete Conan threads (the pre and Post Savage Sword ones) Crazy Old Hermit's Ennis Punisher Super ECW Fans DCU changes Post Crisis to Flashpoint Ozy Spiderman ratings

Well even if it slips down several pages in the forums, it's all linked in the sidebar on the front page and you can access any of the review threads with one click from there without sectioning them off by themselves in the forums.

Perhaps it's just me (because I'm a regular), but I'd never in a million years think of looking for something there... it's all well and good for presentation, but I'm not sure it's great for inducing traffic.

We had a similar discussion before iirc, about setting off the review threads in their own forum, and the idea met with a lot of resistance. The compromise was to set up the sidebar for all the review threads on the front page, which is what everyone visiting the site for the first time sees...and which regulars can choose to be the bookmark in their toolbar if they choose to do so (or can access at any time by clicking on the home link on the site toolbar atop the forum pages). The whole point of the sidebar on the front page is to generate traffic to those threads even if they haven't been updated in a while so no one feels the need to bump them just to bump them, keeping them accessible for people to check out no matter where they are in the cheque of active threads. Individual members can also choose to bookmark whatever threads they are interested in to find them easily by clicking the bookmark link on the site toolbar atop any of the forum pages and it takes them to a list of all the threads they have bookmarked, making finding threads that are not recently active very easy. -M

For what it's worth, I am not necessarily opposed to creating a separate section for reviews, but I'm not necessarily convinced it's the right move either. I agree that a lot of regulars do not make use of the front page and, while I wish they would (coke & comics and I both work quite hard to maintain it and make it useful), it's our job to respond to the needs of the community, not to drive it.
So I am open to debating this again. Present your arguments.

I'm not talking about just any reviews, I'm talking just completed threads, where a complete series/run/discussion happened, and is not going to be updated any more.
I'm thinking having such things separated will all them to be more easily visited by new comers that might not know they exist.... I feel like that's totally different from separating reviews, which we did indeed discuss, and I feel the reason for not doing so are pretty much the same.
I guess the question is, do alot of people look at the home page and use it as a source of navigation after their first visit? Is there some way to know that?

I'm aware that was your point, but we might as well put the whole idea of giving review threads their own section back on the table as well. If there was a section for ALL review threads, they would only take up a maximum of two pages. Nothing would ever exactly get buried. And, eventually, even a completed review threads section would get to be two pages long, so it's pretty much the same issue (or lack of issue) regardless. Best way to find out is anecdotally. I can get stats on how many people visit the front page per day versus log on to the main forum page, but that wouldn't tell me how many of those people are regular posters. We have an average of six hundred people visit the site each day who never log in and never post.

I'm aware that was your point, but we might as well put the whole idea of giving review threads their own section back on the table as well. I'm against this for the reasons we were earlier. Some people will miss them if they're not integrated. Subforums are a balance. On the one hand, too much stuff on one forum and people will miss things. So split them up. On the other, too many subforums and people will only go to some of them and again miss things. A review thread subforum will attract a crew of regulars, but may miss people who don't seek them out specifically. wildfire's idea, something of a "featured archive", has merit. I'm not sure it's necessary given how easy to the review threads are to find from the front page. Do regulars tend to miss the front page? I go to it because I tend not to use bookmarks. I instead start typing classiccomics.boards.net, let my browser autocomplete, and that's where it takes me. From there I peek at the recent threads.

For what it's worth, I think we're fine with the way it is now. I trust shax and the other mods, though, so however they call it is okey-dokey with me. And yes, the front page is bookmarked on my browser so I see it -- and check it for new stuff -- every time I log on.
Cei-U! I summon the wait-and-see attitude!

I'm bookmarked to the home page, and while I don't always use it to find things, I do know that is where I can go to locate a particular review thread. I don't know if adding another section would be an enhancement to the site or a detriment, although if forced to pick, I would lean toward detriment, as it would represent further fragmentation of the community.
On a side note, sort of related, what are the parameters for starting a review thread around here? I've been toying with the idea of not doing the Reading Club next year and sacrificing quantity of books read for a deep dive into the Captain America series.

what are the parameters for starting a review thread around here? None, really. So long as your reviews are comprehensible and make some degree of sense, I throw it up on the front page once you've hit three reviews and have made it clear that you're going to stick with the project (many many review threads fizzle before the third review). I suppose that, one day, we'll have an incident where a review thread is so rife with problems of one kind or another that we have to make the call NOT to include it, but it hasn't happened yet, and I hope it never will.

I guess more people use the front page than I thought. I don't use bookmarks either, so I do go to the front page every visit, but I don't really every look at it (unless there's a new pic)... I'd never think to use it to look for something, I'd be more likely to search for it (which only sometimes works, as I'm sure anyone who has used search engines knows).
