I never got the Silver Surfer love. Part of that was because I was born in the early 70's, so I wasn't part of the "Jim Morrison is a great poet" contingent that was apparently drawn to the character, and I lived in a land-locked area in the eastern US, so surfing never held any particular interest to me. Cool visual aside, the Surfer just seemed like a little emo kid to me, always whining about his lot in life and thinking the kind of "deep" thoughts that only make sense after a few joints and a big bag of food from Taco Bell. But that is what makes Silver Surfer enjoyable. It is hilarious! Exactly! He was so different from the rest of hte testosterone heroes. The concept was really romantic, probably not the ploting and writing though....

I am so opposite of you on SS: Lee's writing of him was perfect, imo. It was classic how he woed the same way through every issue. I loved how dramatic he was, and his struggle with having to help people who he did not understand, and treated him poorly, was great on a humorous level.

I dropped out of comics about the time the Marshall Rogers Surfer book started so I only know the Surfer from the earlier stuff. I was ten years old when the Lee/Buscema run launched. Even then I thought the gimmick was stupid but the combination of Big John's beautiful pencils and the best scripting Stan ever did made me love him despite the board. But, alas, it was a summer fling. By #6 I was tired of the guy's perpetual weeping and wailing. By the time it had degenerated into Silver Surfer Team-Up, my $.15 was being spent elsewhere. About the only time I liked the character was when he was with the Defenders. I enjoyed the graphic novel by the Sunshine Boys but it was the kind of thrill you get seeing a 70-year-old rock star sing his greatest hits. The Byrne one-shot looked cool but it was Zenn-Bal and Shala-La and blah blah blah. So yeah, loved Silver Surfer #1-5, completely indifferent to everything else.

When he was solo, he reminded me of the guy who would get drunk and then cry all over you about how bad his lot in life was. Eventually you stop hanging around the guy because you know what's coming.

I'm laughing right now thinking of the Woe of Silver Surfer.
They should do a throwback mini, Lee-style, and title it "The Woe of Silver Surfer". Because that's what the original should have been called anyway.
Cold Water I summon what should have been done the first time around!
^^^^ That will be the only time I do that, I think, as it doesn't feel proper.

Although that series gets some stick...ouch, getting a complete run (18 issues I think) can bite in the arse. I'm only halfway there.

Yep, Not Brand Echh #13 from 1969 by Roy Thomas and Marie Severin. I've yet to read the whole series, but I've read a few stories from various issues. This was the final issue.

I love the whining, though! IT IS SO FUNNYYYYY! Sadly, I don't think a comic book character can be considered truly great until he has been turned into a baby or has a dog counterpart. So, NO DICE, cosmic rider of the spaceways!

I love the Silver Surfer - but I don't think you have to empathize a character to love him.
I read SS Vol. 1 as "Nobody wants to hang out with Whine Boy." It's as much Charlie Brown as Superman.
Side note: I just recently found out there was a semi-sequel to Silver Surfer # 4 late in Stan Lee's Thor run, drawn by J. Buscema. I've never heard it mentioned, but I was so glad to read it.
