Kurt Busiek Edition: Marvels is terrible. One of the greatest things about the '60s Stan Lee super-books was the attention paid to the setting - the relationship between the superfolks and the city of New York (and it's people) was complex, nuanced, often very funny, and really gave real world verisimilitude to the books. Conversely, Marvel's "Gosh, Beaver, aren't superheroes golly-gosh neat-o!" moralizing was a gross simplification and a total misunderstanding of what Lee/Kirby/Ditko et. al were trying to do, and actually weakens Golden/Silver Age Marvel if read as part of continuity. Uhh, wow! I mean...WOW! I consider Marvels to be an absolute masterpiece and one of my Top 5 comic stories ever. As for your claim that Busiek's writing was a "gross simplification and a total misunderstanding of what Lee/Kirby/Ditko et. al were trying to do", I honestly couldn't disagree more with that statement. Oh well, one man's meat and all that, I guess. We are talking about the same Marvels by Kurt Busiek that I've read though, right?

Hated long-hair Superman. He was not supposed to look like Rambo. Who came up with this stupid look anyway? Err...late '80s men's fashion?

That will make for a great debate! Confessor, give your take on it please, as Reptisaurus gave his argumented views. I'm genuinely interested since I haven't read it, yet.

It wouldn't matter if the Shazam Captain Marvel was being written by Alan Moore with art by Neal Adams, I still would think the character is hopelessly lame. There. said it. Done by that team it would be mate, the appeal of the character is in his naievite and the childlike joy in the adventures he has. A world where a walking talking tiger, and a malevolent worm are part of the cast has NO place for standard hero stuff, let alone the grim and gritty of the past 30 - 40 years. Love both those creators, but NO. DCs insistance on shoe-horning Shazam into their standard universe shows an utter lack of understanding of who he is, IMHO. To each his own but even the reprints that I read from his 50's stuff didn't do it for me.

It wouldn't matter if Rob Liefeld was being written and drawn by Todd MacFarlane, I still would think the character is hopelessly lame.
There. Said it.

McFarlane and Liefeld both made over 10 times for producing comics than Kirby ever did.

McFarlane and Liefeld both made over 10 times for producing comics than Kirby ever did. In a twist of irony, Liefeld, McFarlane, Lee, and the rest of the Image founders were friends of Kirby's and published much of his never seen work through their own imprint. They then gave all of the profits to Kirby and his wife.

John Buscema as an overall artist (not innovator) is better than Jack Kirby

I didn't realize John Buscema was a comic book character.....
or Liefeld or McFarlane, etc. Kirby has appeared enough times he could be considered one, but then the comic book character's artisitic skill and style were never really displayed in the pages for comments about comic book characters...

Yeah, and Michael Bay's probably made more money than Hitchcock, John Ford and Kurosawa put together, too, but whom will they be talking about (as opposed to laughing at) for as long as there are movies?

Hated long-hair Superman. He was not supposed to look like Rambo. Who came up with this stupid look anyway? Err...late '80s men's fashion? I didn't mean generally, I meant...on HIM...it just looked...so out of place. I didn't mind my hair bands like Megadeth and Iron Maiden. I couldn't stand Luthor with a head full of red hair either...
