Err...late '80s men's fashion? I didn't mean generally, I meant...on HIM...it just looked...so out of place. I didn't mind my hair bands like Megadeth and Iron Maiden. I couldn't stand Luthor with a head full of red hair either... Long hair superman was just a product of the times. Didn't bother me much then and doesn't really now either but it is a dated look now. The only thing that bugged me about it was how long they kept it. Still curious and amazed they let left that look so long after it was in vogue. Still, I'd happily welcome back mullet supes.. Red supes, blue supes... Electric boogaloo supes over nucoke supes.

A post over in the "what ole fart comic u red " thread made me realise...
Astro City...I just dont get the hype...read it up to the current volume...meh, cant bring myself to start the new series/volume. Probably the only thing I liked was the Steel tough guy issues, but the rest...I keep waiting for some great revelation, a eureka moment as I see the light, but no, all I get is bored.
Which brings me to Kurt Busiek, generally seen as a good writer, gave us that Avengers run, and Avengers/JLA and Kingdom Come or Marvels (I can never remember, Im not just being a tool). Ive had my eureka moment about him. Eureka...you dont actually like his books young pakehafullalad, Avengers/JLA - boring Astro City - overhyped Avengers V3 - bland and Triathlon There is a pattern here, and Im glad the weight has lifted, the truth is free, take a chance folks and admit it to yourselves...
I gots nuthin against Kurt, even if he did tell me off for the way I expressed my view on Jack Kirbys scripting, over at CBR a couple years ago. I even like Kingdom Come and Marvels(YES I know) so Im capable of being a little nice.

Considering how 'extreme' things were in vogue in the 90s, Superman got off easy with the long hair.
Looking back, I was pretty lucky in avoiding the comics that really suffered from the bad 90s tropes. It wasn't until well after the 90s ended that I even saw a comic with the name Liefeld on it or heard his name.

His Avengers was solid and I HATED Triathlon too.

For what it's worth, I agree that it was a terrible look for Supes. I did at the time and I sure do now. Long, fashionable hair on a character as straight down the line, altruistic and wholesomely American as Superman always seemed really weird somehow. Still, even Luke Skywalker ended up with a Rambo or He-Man-esque haircut and bandana in the Star Wars comic in the late '80s...

How about these? If that's an actual variant cover, I'd most certainly get it...but I think it's fan art...correct me if I'm wrong. The Spidey cover above was an actual 1 in 50 variant for #674.

Long, fashionable hair on a character as straight down the line, altruistic and wholesomely American as Superman always seemed really weird somehow. But Indians used to have long hair, and they were the most altruistic and wholesomely americans you could find : they handed over their land to a bunch of criminal euro trash...

John Buscema as an overall artist (not innovator) is better than Jack Kirby There. I said it. I'm also one of the minorities in not having Mr Kirby's art that high on my list. But, as I mentioned (in another thread I think, maybe here on the subject of Surfer) that while I don't care much for Mr Lee's writing, I do respect all the ideas and innovation he did in making Marvel comics what it is. The same goes for Mr Kirby. If he hadn't done what he did, there would not be such a great selection of artists that he inspired, whether I personally like his art or not. Without Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, I don't even think comics themselves as a medium would be what they are today, even outside of Marvel. They may not, be to some, a good writer or artist, but their influence is undeniable.

Personally I tried it when I was old enough to move out of the house, as my folks wouldn't allow it, for whatever religious and social stigmas associated with it. In the US, yeah there's still some old curmudgeons that still give it the ole "hippie" or denotation of homosexuality. (I actually have a customer that I've known through my various oilfield jobs over the years that revels in joshing me about having pierced ears.) But I think that's in the minority as oppose to the majority. Both my boys have long hair. My youngest, 9, blonde and curly and my oldest 12, brown. They've never told me that anyone has made fun of them for it, at school, at least.

Yeah, you won't ever hear me arguing that aspect. He's very good with machinery and monsters. No one to this day does a better Mangog and Ulik (and the reasons I even picked up old Thor comics) to this day. But for me, as humans are the one real thing in comics (at least) there are quite a few artist, that while accomplished draw some ugly women ... and men.

Yeah, I agree...drawing the fairer sex wasn't an area in which Kirby particularly excelled. Some of those Silver Age pin-ups of Sue Storm that he did make her positively scary looking!

The most baffling thing about Supermans long hair was peoples over the top reaction at a character having long hair.
