This was always my favorite Submariner look. Fifth! I was just glad to see the guy put some clothes on. He's a king, fercryinoutloud. Besides, it gets cold underwater. And the glider wings. . .um. . .well, they looked cool. Kinda. He's not affected by the cold water. If the man can block bullets and shark bites, cold water surely is not going to harm him. And at least for this outfit the included cut-outs for his ankle wings which makes way more sense than any other costume (besides the classic trunks) he's been in. In his most recent Invaders costume, there were holes on the sides of his boots for his wings. I can only imagine what stuffing his wings through tiny holes would be like. And then there's the dreaded, RIDICULOUS Phoenix costume that makes nooooo sense what-so-ever. Heh, just like that event.

I like the costume, myself. IIRC, didn't it have an in-story purpose? (artifically re-creating his powers when he lost them for a while).
Also, it looks cool. It's a nice change of pace. I agree it would be cool to see it be 'royal formal wear' or something.

I haven't really read much of the 80s and 90s stuff... I know they did a Byrne series that made him a businessman-enviornmentalist.. that didn't really work for me.
I started reading Supervillain Team up on my trip, though, which so far seems to be a direct continuation of the 70s Namor series... after 2 giant size specials and the 1st issue, it's clearly a Namor book (with copies Roy Thomas references to the past series) with Doom as a supporting character.
You definitely should pick it up, CW, if you don't already have it. There's a nice trade with the whole series that came out not too long ago.

I've always preferred Namor's original green-scale trunks look. Namor is one of those ironies that comes to mind when people bring up how female characters have always been over-sexualized. Of course this is true...but so have the male's! Surely his original trunks were black? I should have said "iconic" instead of original. I thought his Golden Age trunks were red?

But before they collected it, I ended up buying the two giant-sized Super-Villain Team-Up issues. I am soooo glad they decided to put that into collection, though, because the individual issues can be a bit pricey.

I agree it would be cool to see it be 'royal formal wear' or something. As I recall, he lost the ability to survive out of the water, and Reed Richards created a costume which would enable him to do so, as he had earlier done for Triton.

I'll be the negative curmudgeon here. Hated this costume from the get-go. It's Black Bolts costume unbuttoned. And a belt with a trident symbol? What, they sold out of the ones with a little submarine on it? You're in the water 99% of the time-male swimmers don't wear spandex costumes, why should he? The lack of costume made him stand out from the 1000s of costumed clowns out there. It kept his continuity from the golden age as well. I was glad when this costume got sent to the cleaners and then got lost It does look like Black Bolt's costume because of the wings, yes, but they really look like fins more than wings so I think the look makes sense on Namor. As for the trident, isn't Neptune's trident a religious symbol in Atlantis? I'd argue it makes more sense here than a little "s"; it's like a cross on the tabbard of a crusader. I do agree that the green Speedo really makes Namor stand out in a crowd of heroes, but I really like this design anyway. Like Spidey's black costume or Daredevil red and black armor, it can't replace the original look but looks really fine. I must wonder how it makes sense for underwater people to wear any kind of clothing, though... The speedo makes more sense in that regard. Or, I suppose, one of those full-body-suits you see some competitive swimmers wear that are supposed to enhance the hydrodynamics and let them move through the water with less resistance - or are they banned now? Regardless, that kind of thing might make sense, if they wanted to go to a high-tech look as opposed to the trunks.

Surely his original trunks were black? I should have said "iconic" instead of original. I thought his Golden Age trunks were red? They were typically black/blue through the Golden Age, then a dark orange when he reappeared in FF #4 and #6, finally shifting to green around the time of FF #9.
Not that anyone asked, but I dislike the finned 70s costume. It makes Namor look like a member of KISS (I realize that's viewed as a benefit to some here).
