I should have said "iconic" instead of original. I thought his Golden Age trunks were red? They were typically black/blue through the Golden Age That's back when, Golden Age style, he was wearing his underwear on the outside!

As I recall, he lost the ability to survive out of the water, and Reed Richards created a costume which would enable him to do so, as he had earlier done for Triton. Re Triton: I know that Maximus devised a way for Triton to breathe when Tri's on land, way back in FF #54 (one of my all-time favorite Marvel issues)...did Reed subsequently devise something for Triton too? I don't recall that, but then again I don't know the Bronze Age too well (I'm stuck in the Silver Age ) And my vote is for classic Namor-in-trunks--any color, scaly or not!

Invisible Girl: "Oh, Reed! He looks so menacing! Who is he?"
Mister Fantastic: "I don't know, darling! He sounds like the Sub-Mariner, but his trunks are the wrong color!"
Namor: "Seriously?"

I always think Maximus should be written as the Inhuman whose power is to be so smart he's crazy, which is why they have to keep him locked up most of the time.

Don't you know in the world of comics all super-heroes look exactly alike except for their costumes. That's why you can't tell Peter Parker from Peter Rasputin in Romita's art except when they are in costume, or Clint Barton from Steve Rogers in Don Heck Avengers issues unless they are suited up. So it's not surprising that Namor can' be recognized if he simply gets clean underwear-it's the way of the world in comic land. As for Namor's trunks-if being nearly nekkid is such a help underwater, why is it that the rest of Atlantean civilization wears clothes, armor, and other garb? Personally I think they make Namor wear green short shorts because he's a half-breed, it's a pariah thing or a you're not a full adult so you get to wear knickers until you pass a rite of passage thing. You know, Namor walks by all full of piss and vinegar and then the Atlanteans all snicker and point as his little short-shorts. It explains why he has such a chip on his shoulder and the puffed out arrogance he displays when in the surface world. I'll show them they can't disrespect me and my short-shorts. I am Namor...Then he got this cool tricked out suit from Reed in the Bronze Age and people still snickered. It's hard to be the scion of Atlantis... -M

No matter the costume, Namor will never EVER be as cool as Aquaman.
There. I said it.

I should have said "iconic" instead of original. I thought his Golden Age trunks were red? They were typically black/blue through the Golden Age, then a dark orange when he reappeared in FF #4 and #6, finally shifting to green around the time of FF #9.
Not that anyone asked, but I dislike the finned 70s costume. It makes Namor look like a member of KISS (I realize that's viewed as a benefit to some here).
That's right. I've read a few of the early Golden Age stories so I should have remembered that. I'll just finish by saying that, even as a heterosexual male, I like my Sub-Mariner as close to naked as possible. *ahem*

And even *I* couldn't exactly recall what color his trunks were in the golden age. And I just read that, what, last week? Yeah, last week. I like when his trunks look like short swim trunks, though. Not that speedo stuff. Speedos are just not really that attractive on anyone. In fact, I think that the skin-tight polyester bell bottom body suits men sometimes wore in the 70s looks better than speedos. And that's something.

No matter the costume, Namor will never EVER be as cool as Aquaman. There. I said it. Yeah, that is crazy talk. I LIKE Ramona Fradon. I LIKE Nick Cardy. I LIKE Jim Aparo.* But their best is about 1/300th as good as Everett's Sub-Mariner. It's not just that he was good. But he was the template for every water dwelling hero. Including Aquaman. He's the anti-hero template for every Marvel/DC character created after 1970. (I completely agree that good Aquaman is better than poopy old Lee/Kirby Sub-Mariner, though.) * And I DON'T CARE about anyone else's work on the character. Although I guess I'm supposed to read the Atlantis Chronicles. *Sigh* I'm gonna wait 'till I read everything that might potentially be good first, though.

Yes, okay, golden age Namor was best. But I still love Roy Thomas' Namor. And you won't change my mind with all your naysaying, Rep.

Everett Sub-Mariner ('40s, '50s, and '60s) is the best.
Other Sub-Mariner's are varying degrees of inferior, but not always terrible. Thomas Sub-Mariner is acceptable.
Roger Stern did good a pretty good Sub-Mariner in his Avengers run. I liked Peter Milligan's recent, flat-out horror take on the Sub-Mariner.
I've heard okay-to-good things about John Byrne's Sub-Mariner run, but I've never read it.
And Lee's Sub-Mariner is just wrong.

Also, as the World's Leading Authority on Team-Up books, all 3,047,000 writers and artists on Super-Villain Team-Up did a good job with Subby.
