Let's play a game: Guess which Warren Ellis character I am: - I abuse one or more controlled substances - I have little respect for society's conventions, but I have a strong internal moral compass - I get my hands bloody so normal society can keep chugging along - I make creative, over-the-top verbal threats - Boy howdy, am I cynical
IOW, Warren Ellis is a Mary Sue factory, and his Mary Sues are the X-treme(!!!) anti-heroes of an adolescent mind.
There, I said it and you heard it.

I hate the idea that without superheroes, there would be no supervillains. No doubt somebody thought this was a very clever concept but I hate it. It makes superheroes worse than useless - it makes them detrimental. The world would be better off without them. I prefer to think that the existence of sueprheroes is a reaction to a world in trouble, a world in need of great heroes.

One of the main things about heroes that has been a bit forgotten is that they step in to stop trouble that is happening.

Besides, Earth-3 has plenty of villains with barely a hero in sight.

Besides, Earth-3 has plenty of villains with barely a hero in sight. That’s because they killed them all.

This was what should have been the easily dismissed excuse the Vision used to explain the UN reaction (with the accords) in Captain America - Civil War. Someone should have reminded him that in the 70 years that passed while the world's only superhero was in suspended animation, Hydra--with weapons based on alien stones--grew and influenced / terrorized the world. Hydra is a textbook supervillain organization that was never a reaction to the existence of superheroes. In short, that film's main conflict was built on the flimsiest of ideas. Evil flourishes whether there's a counter reaction or not.

It’s not because of cops that criminals exist! It’s not because of toiler paper that... *ahem*... okay, that metaphor has run its course.

Counterpoint, I like the idea that Batman and Gotham being its own brand of special crazy is kind of a self-fulfilling situation.. not that Batman came out of nowhere, but he does draw forth certain villains because of him. Then again, there seems to be an unusually high level of crazy criminals in Gotham.

Besides, Earth-3 has plenty of villains with barely a hero in sight. That’s because they killed them all. But a new hero arose..... That is, until he sacrificed himself to save his child...

If more comics were given 'acetate' covers to protect the actual cover, and a protective white-wrap to protect the acetate cover, there'd be more high-grade books around.
But it does kind block the wraparound cover unless the white one is removed.
Got this as a prezzie last year, had no idea what it was as it's become next to impossible to keep up with variant editions now.
There, I said it.

I guess if the acetate cover becomes smudged , it loses it's grade. You can't win.

Plastic like that gets rubbed though. I have a hardcover book with an acetate jacket and even though it was bought new and handled carefully by me, it has a lot of rubbing and buffing to it, I guess from being packed and shipped with other books. It looks awful.
