Wait which Marvel cards are going for what? I have full sets of several. I don't know much about this, but I do know there has been a huge surge in prices caused - at least in part - by the fact that you can now get the Marvel cards graded like sports cards. I know a card with the image of Hulk #181 sold for like $3400 or something. Which is maybe the dumbest thing I've ever heard, as you can get an actual Hulk #181 for that much money.

Oh wow. Maybe it’s worth getting my card collection graded. Unlike comics, sitting around or looking them really is all you do with those.

Wait which Marvel cards are going for what? I have full sets of several. It all stems from CGC now having a card-grading service. Those cards were printed poorly, and many were less than 9.0 even coming off the assembly line due to misalignments and other mishaps. So it began with condition collectors driving up the prices on unopened packs and boxes because they had the potential to contain high grades. As of now, the value of individual cards have gone up considerably, but unless you are sure you have a gradable card, it's still probably worth $2.

Even $2 for a single one of those in 2021 is mind blowing. Do you know of a resource for checking which cards are desirable? I think I have full sets of Marvel series 1, Marvel Masterpiece 1 and X-Men series 1, at minimum.

I've only tangentially followed the trend since discovering the one video I posted in the trading card thread. My best guess would be to do a search of sold items for the Marvel cards on ebay and see what's moving for what price. Here's a follow up video by the guy who did the video I posted about which of his cards he was sending in to be graded, which might be helpful, I am not sure. he has a few vids about the card market explosion, so if you look through his vids on his youtube channel, you might find a few more. I am sure someone has posted a list somewhere on the web of which cards are hot or tracked sales and such, but I haven't followed the thing closely enough to know who did it or where it might be. -M

If people think that they can simply open a vintage pack of cards and get a qualifiable "9.8" or "10" right out of the pack, they are in for some sad disappointment. It's not nearly as easy as the dumbed-down 9.8 grades on modern comics... especially if they use a real card grading service like PSA. Reputable card-grading services are way more stringent than CGC is on anything.
Centering and super-sharp corners rule the day in card grading... in comics, not so much. There are other factors, of course. It's a different world.

I agree; pretty sure I mentioned this in another thread, but I prefer the style that solidified by the late 1940s and then held sway from the 1950s onward. Harry Lucey is probably my favorite Archie artist.

Harry Lucey is probably my favorite Archie artist. Lucey was a fantastic artist; not only did he create such a stylish, memorable look for the Archie line, but he applied knowledge of other genre art to the Archie stories, so when it was called for, you would see a type of illustration associated with police, horror or movie-style slapstick. Next to Lucey, Al Hartley, Samm Schwartz and Stan Goldberg are among my favorite Archie artists.

He's been my favourite Archie artist for a good long while, and has been since I realized what a genius he was at slapstick and visual humour. No one draws an exasperated Mr. Lodge like Lucey!

I just watched an interview w/ Jaime Hernandez where he talked about Lucey as the "good Archie artist" (though even as late as the 80s when he would talk to other artists, nobody knew who that artist was).
