I'm thinking of having these graded. It used to be my go-to joke that '90s kids were waiting to see Youngblood #1 go up in price, but I just sold Spawn #1 for $40. This market is insane with nostalgia right now, so Youngblood might well be next.

I told my dealer to keep his Spawn #1 for the time-being....it's actually signed by McFarlane with a COA. He also has the B&W cover which I think was a 1:100 variant at the time....dealers had to order 100 regular copies to get 1 of those.
So he's sitting on those 2....although if he gets an offer to good to refuse.....

The funny thing is that ,at the time the books were released, the "Experts" were saying that they have too high a print run to be worth anything.

The funny thing is that ,at the time the books were released, the "Experts" were saying that they have too high a print run to be worth anything. The experts weren't exactly wrong. My assumption is that enough people decided these books weren't valuable in the thirty years since and gave them away/sold them/tossed them out that the nostalgia factor is generating a surge, but there is still plenty of supply to meet the demand, so prices will not remain high in the long run. Then again, the back issue market (much like the stock market) is driven far more by perception than reality. Hulk #181 is the first appearance of Wolverine, Brave and the Bold #60 is the first appearance of Wondergirl, Silver Surfer #4 is rare because it had a "low" print run....we accept these demonstrably false facts because everyone else does too. So maybe Spawn #4 keeps going up in value even though there are more copies in existence than anyone could ever possibly need.

It's immensely disappointing how terrible almost all Evil Dead-related comics are. Except for the Army of Darkness adaptation; that one's excellent, arguably better than the film itself.

I've read that comic, the dialogue is beyond ridiculous (I think Spidey even says Jive Turkey at one point),and as for the plan of the villain,,well: {Spoiler: Click to show} He's an alien, convincing teens to have kids so that said kids can end up being cheap labor for their planet,,uhh, couldnt he just kidnap the teens for that purpose?

There is a way for a Spider-Man story to address birth control. This is not it. They might as well have turned every guy on Earth into Jonah Jameson...

I just looked through the whole issue, which was done in conjunction with Planned Parenthood; but, it's really patronizing and vague, even with things like condoms, which is only referenced as "things you can get at a drug store". There are notations of information that could be obtained from Planned Parenthood, for a minor fee (35 cents, or so); but, this is nowhere nearly as effective as the later Death Talks About Life, which included a demonstration of the proper way to apply a condom. The Spidey thing was done in 1976, but reads like it was written by a repressed person in 1966. Kind of surprised that Planned Parenthood would go with some of the really vague stuff in there, which makes me wonder if Marvel wasn't willing to be more direct.
At least its a step towards education. We got like two or three days, in health class, with someone from Planned Parenthood, with very little information offered up, other than what a condom looked like and a lot of stupid remarks from my classmates (we were split into gender groups, so it was just guys wisecracking). This was my senior year, so 1983/84. I learned more from our World Book Encyclopedias. You just had to figure out how to search for the right articles, like "sexual intercourse," and "reproductive cycle, among others. Slang terms didn't work as well.

Condoms were pretty much a tabboo subject in mass media until the 80s, which would explain Marvel not wanting to be more direct. It would be interesting to know who signed off on this.

Hey IcctromboneAnd just like that, Youngblood #2 was the #4 biggest mover on Go Collects Hot Comics of the week for the week of 3/31 because of those movie rumors. It gets talked about here... by the same dude I linked for the Marvel Trading Cards surge in Shax's thread. Oh and that Superman #4 with the first Bloodsport is the #2 mover as well. -M
