Forme it can sometimes depend on the genre - as mrp mentioned, superhero books usually work much better in colour - but more often and more fiundamentally, it's the style of the artwork: something ike the example rags posted I think works perfectly in black and white, because the artist has added a lot of texture and atmosphere that might actually be masked by adding colour. OTOH, I don<t often enjoy those Marvel black and white reprints of colour superhero comics because for me the artwork doesn<t look complete without the colour.

I love b&w as a palette for many comics of many genres. But not super-heroes for the most part. I think the super-hero genre loses something in the translation without the bright colors and often gaudy palettes. It's not that I won't read super-heroes in b&w, I just think that particular genre is better suited to color. But some of my favorite all time comics are done in b&W (and often when a color alternative is available such as with Bone or Elfquest, I prefer the b&W if I go back for a reread). -M
I totally agree. There are some books that I can't even imagine in anything other than black and white... Xenozoic Tales, for example. I also have the Epic reprints under the Cadillacs & Dinosaurs moniker, and while it is different in color, I don't enjoy it as much as the original Kitchen Sink issues.
Certain artists just work better in the monochromatic format. Maybe it's just my affinity for '80's "B&W boom" books that rose-tints my thinking.

Wish Creepy Magazine stories like this were done in colour. These are the first 2 pages of this 6 page tale. I'm not a big fan of B&W B&W lends itself to emotional tones and a sense of seriousness not often found in color comics--specifically horror comics. While Warren's horror titles were graced with some of the finest color covers of any comics ever published, even they did not capture the bleak, personal feelings on the level of the B&W art within. This is not to say some color horror comics could not be effective or even great (e.g., DC's House of Mystery, House of Secrets, Unexpected, Secrets of Sinister House, The Witching Hour etc.), B&W horror was another animal altogether, drawing the reader into a world removed from the familiar colors of every other comic. Heh...well....

The great things about the Warren mags were that, because they were designed to be printed in B&W, the artists used a variety of techniques: pen and ink, wash, duotone, charcoal, airbrush...
When Hamilton comics (Gladstone) tried their B&W horror books in the early 90s, they had the artists send line art in to get photographed in case they ever wanted to re-use them in a color book. Then they returned the art so the artist could add tones for B&W printing.

You know it's time to lay off the comics and take a couple breaths when you type a search in youtube instead of ebay.
Must be the alcohol in my ginger beer.
There, I drank it.
I never pegged you for a drinker.

Had some end-of-year 'nothing to lose' fun by sending 15 half-baked offers (none that I'd personally accept myself as I low-balled 35%-40% off) and suprisingly, 8 of them were accepted. So never be shy to play some hardball.
There, I saved some cash....

Reading through Conway's run on Thor and I have a bone to pick: Did the final battle (more of an axe chop to Thor's head by Pluto really) between Thor and Pluto in #199-#201 really need to be three issues long? I mean, don't get me wrong, I do love a good build up, but it felt like I was reading a play by play of pre-Kai cutdown of Dragon Ball Z

Yeah I sent off a few offers also. So far, 2 have been accepted. Closed off 2021 with this neat HC....one of the better Wolverine covers I've seen.

Vicente Alcazar is an example of this for me - one of my favourite artists in black and white but the few colour comics I've seen him do aren't nearly as effective, to my eyes. maybe Alfdo Alcala too, though in his case the difference in quality isn't as marked.

You never know unless you ask, and as long as you accept a no gracefully and don't lowball too egregiously, no harm, no foul. Sometimes people just want to be rid of the damn thing.

As someone who's been out of the comics loop for 20 years, it blows my mind that Image publishes critically acclaimed comics.
