Reading through Conway's run on Thor and I have a bone to pick: Did the final battle (more of an axe chop to Thor's head by Pluto really) between Thor and Pluto in #199-#201 really need to be three issues long? I mean, don't get me wrong, I do love a good build up, but it felt like I was reading a play by play of pre-Kai cutdown of Dragon Ball Z For me, Conway is one of those writers who ping-pong between brilliance and hackery. I have learned to shy away from reprints of anything he wrote unless I KNOW it's a great story.

Wish Creepy Magazine stories like this were done in colour. These are the first 2 pages of this 6 page tale. I'm not a big fan of B&W.
There, I reached for some crayons.
Black and White, when it's the intended printing method, can be awesome. The yellowing of the paper (as in your example) can really put a crimp in the effect. If you want to check out some modern B+W stuff, Batman Black and White is really well done.

Oh, my god. How did Peter Milligan and Mike Allred get put in charge of an X-book? Their X-Force is so subversive. It's great!

Back in '96, my mother bought me a Calvin and Hobbes collection. Right away, I started using it as a colouring book. Worked on it off-and-on for about eight years before I coloured the final panel.
It was a fun distraction at the time, but adult me wouldn't dream of recreating such blasphemy today.

Sometimes I think people that keep items wrapped away and are afraid to handle them , are strange. Myself included. I never knew you were young, Duragizer.

Eh.
While that HB contained work from a few longtime talents, none of the newer artists compare to the masters of satirical art, nor is it ever as potent as it had been in black and white.

Oh, my god. How did Peter Milligan and Mike Allred get put in charge of an X-book? Their X-Force is so subversive. It's great! At the time, I was so F****** fed up, it was the only "X"-book I would go anywhere near. It was shocking how violent it was when it started... then, slowly, it began to become more "comfortable".
That said, I had to hand it to them, virtually thumbing their nose at the company by KILLING OFF the entire cast in their last issue. A way of saying "We don't want ANYONE ELSE screwing over our characters when we're gone."
I much prefer Allred's MADMAN. I often lament that the big corporations have the market so swamped that they make it almost impossible for anyone else to make a living. I hate seeing some of my top favorite talents forced to work for Marvel or DC, just to get by. (Frank Cho is another one.)
I long for the day when corporations are put down like the mad dogs they are.

It was a fun distraction at the time, but adult me wouldn't dream of recreating such blasphemy today. My favorite coloring book as a kid was the MAJOR MATT MASON (Mattel's Man In Space). I probably put more work into that than any other coloring book, perhaps because the art was better than in any other such book I'd ever seen.
Decades later, I dug it out, and noticed, it may be the only such book that listed who the artist was: DAN SPIEGLE! Whoa. I fell in love with his somewhat-"rough" work on BLACKHAWK (the only "Earth-1" version they ever did).
Part of me would love to get another copy of that coloring book-- scan it into my computer-- and color the whole thing, in Photoshop!

Full-colour interior, Hardcover MAD is awesome....this is from 2012. B&W sucks hehe
Years ago I bought a stack of mostly coverless Mad magazines from the 60's-70's Thinking I could enjoy those Movie and TV parodies. What a bummer, I felt nothing.

At the time, I was so F****** fed up, it was the only "X"-book I would go anywhere near. I'm partial to David's X-Factor, Generation X, and to a lesser extent, Alpha Flight and Excalibur
But honestly, if I want X-Men, I tend to go off-brand. I think Valiant's Harbinger, Eclipse's DNAgents, and Comico's Elementals handled a lot of ideas in X-Men in far more interesting and unique ways
