Something always seemed a little off to me after Pollard on ASM (I consider him the last in a long of fabulous ASM pencilers), I never quite liked Romita Jr.'s art. His covers generally didn't make me want to buy the book.
Ron Frenz brought back some classic Spidey vibe for me (though I grew to like him even more on Thor).

I liked Romita Jr's '60s work, especially on Spidey and X-Men. His Iron Man was overwhelmed by Layton's finishes but still good. I'd place him behind Diyko, Andru, Kane, and his dad but ahead of Mooney, Byrne, Zeck, both Buscemas (it clearly wan;t Big John's cuppa), Pollard, and (ugh!) McFarlane. Todd's not a comics storyteller; he designs posters for resale. Can't comment on anything that's appered over the last three-and-a-half decades. Cei-U! I summon the impressive roster of talent! Was that a typo, or did JR Jr. publish in the 60s?? As he was born in 56, that would have been quite the feat. That said, count me among those who don't care for his work. Even when I was a lad and wasn't really aware of artists by name, I picked up an issue of X-Men he did and wondered why the art was so ugly this issue. I now know I don't like his blocker, squared off style. That's just me.

Sal Buscema's run on Spectacular Spider-Man, especially when he inked himself, was ......spectacular. There, I said it! Oh, yeah. Love that, and also his work on the early issues of PPSSM. And on Marvel Team-up. He's part of my pentumvirate of top Spidey artists along with Ditko, Romita Sr., Kane and Andru. And, of course, he's the definitive Hulk artist.

I will NEVER understand folks who proclaim Sal Buscema as a great Hulk artist, let alone the definitive one. I regard his interminable run on that seriesas its absolute nadir artistically. And while I enjoyed his Defenders run, it was in spite of his squat, doughy-faced version of ol' Purple Pants. But that's what makes a horse race, I guess.
Cei-U! I summon the aesthetic befuddlement!

Well, I have the same view of Trimpe's run on Hulk - which I've occasionally seen praised to high heaven. His art on that title was only good (not great, mind you) when Severin was inking/finishing it. Otherwise, it's kind of dire.

Trimpe was a talented storyteller and fantastic layout artist but his inability to draw normal human characters (as opposed to monsters) perpetually undercut his effectiveness. Inkers like Severin and Jack Able softened and gave enough life to his stiff, awkward figures to render them tolerable to my eye but otherwise, yeah, "dire" is an apt description. Still, I'll take his Hulk over Sal's every time.

I'll take Trimpe's Hulk over anyone's! Especially inked by Severin.
Imprinting and all that!

Sal is my definitive Hulk.
I grew to appreciate Trimpe's storytelling, but when it comes to pure aesthetic, it's not even close for me. Viva la Bronze Age!!

This is exactly how I feel about Jack Kirby in general. One of my favorite Silver Surfer renders, as well as the couple issues he did of Warlock. And hands down still to this day the best Mangog. Not to mention his other random monsters like the (unfortunately well too over exposed) Groot.

Sal Buscema was a great Spider-Man artist. Romita Jr didn't really come into his own until Al Williamson inked him on Daredevil. His ASM stuff is good, but he'd be the first to admit that editorial was heavy handed about giving his pencils a house style look. I HATED his art on X-Men, but it turns out what I was really hating was Dan Green's inking on his pencils. I agree that Williamson was one of the first to really make his pencils look good. Green was really sketchy for some reason when paired with him.

The difference, though, is that Kirby Could draw realistic looking people (check out his romance work of the late '40s) but chose not to, for both stylistic and economic reasons, while Trimpe was trying his level best and simply lacked the eye for it.
Cei-U! I summon the unfortunate comparison!

I never viewed Sal Buscema as the definitive artist on any title, certaily not for Spider-Man. Where Hulk artists are concerned, he paled in comparison to Trimpe, Barr and the team of Simonson & Alcala.

Sal was the definitive Rom and Defenders artist.

It seemed like everyone and everything was made of rectangular belts, and nothing was every truly round. Just rounded boxes. Well, that is my decades-letter recollection of my opinion as a 10 year old or whatever it was.
