I'm sure it's been posted before, but Mary Jane was never the "right" or perfect romantic interest for Peter Parker. There. I said it. Loser Peter Parker marrying a supermodel? Yeah, kind of weird.

I preferred virtually every other woman he was even peripherally involved with over her (with the exception of the uber-obnoxious Black Cat). And I never really got over his losing Gwen.
Cei-U! Damn you, Conway!

I thought Gwen was the right balance for Parker's romantic life; she had her own drama, but that grounded her as opposed to Mary Jane, especially the first few years of the post-Gwen era, where she was not written as being deeply connected to Parker, other than the fact she was always attracted to him. Her finest 70s moment was the last page of TASM #122, where she stays to comfort Parker, even after he criticizes her attempt to sympathize in the wake of learning Gwen died.

And there are some good-looking women (and men) who enjoy the thrill of "slumming" or dating beneath them (socially) simply for the power trip. Go figure. Whether attractive or not, self-respect is learned behavior; and some people never achieve it.

Maybe if MJ looked like Big Ethel in the 'jackpot' panel, instead of a ravishing ginger, things would have panned out differently....

Mary Jane might be sapiosexual (attracted to intelligence). Being with Peter makes perfect sense in that case.

In Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Busiek had MJ find out Peter was Spider-Man well before they met. She knew he was special early on.
But if you read the early issues, "Poor Me Peter" had a lot of luck with the ladies. He had Betty Brandt, Liz dumped Flash for him,and he had MJ always asking her Aunt to fix them up through Aunt May. And he was mostly a dick to all of them.

I disagree. Early Peter was nebbish and insecure, and carrying his dedication to Aunt May & the burden of being Spider-Man, so Betty--though sweet to him--was not always so insightful about Peter and could be short with him when she was not reading him correctly.
Liz was so on-again, off-again with her feelings (while actively dating Flash), that Peter--understandably--would become fed up with her.
Mary Jane often came off as too egocentric for anyone to really bond with her, and often, she still attempted to flirt with Peter when he was full-on in love with Gwen (uttlerly disrespecting their relationship), so she was not exactly an innocent party.

I just reread the first twenty issues. Peter is full of that "woe is me" bs while a great girl like Betty genuinely cares for him. But when his Spidey life gets in the way, he just blows her off. He doesn't come up with a sympathetic excuse and he doesn't apologize. He just lies to her and let's suffer. And he has home coming Queen like Liz throwing herself at him, and he treats it more like a competition with Flash than a girl he could be dating. He's a dick.
