And all the Special does is point and laugh at a lot of easy jokes.
True, but I thought there's one scene that remains among my favourites ever : the one where someone asks "what could possibly go wrong" in a room full of giant Computos. The Subs got more respect in the 5YL era, that's for sure.

So I read 'The Lightning Saga' the other night... where 7 legionnaires run into a JLA/JSA team up.. they seem to be trying to bring someone back from the dead... but there's bit of a sinister underpinning, and in the end they seem to capture someone's soul.. and a couple of them stay in the 20th century... any idea if this thread is picked up again, or if it gets Flashpointed away?

Legion was the lower profile title that didn't get Flashpointed, along with Batman and Green Lantern.

Legion of Substitute Heroes Special #1 (1985) I bought this when it first came out. I remember thinking it was fairly amusing at times, but I also didn't think it was as funny as it thought it was. (Although, yes, Eyeful Ethel and Porcupine Pete are hilarious.) Reading it again, thirty years later, after reading a lot more appearances of the Legion of Substitute Heroes, especially from the 1960s, the Legion of Substitute Heroes Special seems kind of lazy. There is a lot of humor in these characters, but the Special is just a lot of cheap jokes at the expense of a concept that really should be a whole lot more than what we got here. The Special completely ignores the gallantry and the humanity of the Subs and the deep-down feelings of inadequacy some of them must feel at the rejection of the LSH. And all the Special does is point and laugh at a lot of easy jokes. A huge misfire from Levitz and Giffen. As far as I know, this is the only time the Subs ever had their own comic. It's amusing at times, but it's such a wasted opportunity. There was an issue of Secret Origins a few years later with the Substitute Legion, written and drawn by Ty Templeton. It covered much of what you said about their gallantry and those feelings of inadequacy. Of course, by the end of the story, it appears those feelings may be well-deserved, but the characters are still fun and engaging. There was also a Dr. Light story by Craig Boldman and Mike Parobeck in that same issue which was nothing short of brilliant (pardon the pun-of-sorts).

I can't say for sure, but I seem to recall it led into a Final Crisis tie-in called "Legion of 3 Worlds" a year later. I bought both, read both, and rather quickly couldn't remember much of anything about both.

They mentioned Legion of 3 Worlds, but in the past, as if it had already happened... I'll have to check that out.

It all got picked up on at the time - it lead into a story in Superman and into Legion of Three Worlds. The soul that was captured in the lightning rod is revealed in Legion of Three Worlds.

I just hope that don't try to do another reboot or retcon to attach to a previous continunity. Just tell a great Legion story. We can figure it out as we go along.

I finished Spider-Man #99 to #115 yesterday (Great stuff!) and I decided to read Adventure Comics #306 to #317, the John Forte Legion adventures I've never read because I only had Legion Archives #1, 3, 4 and 5.
They're great, of course. I just opened up (online) Adventure #309 and the title page has a totally weird random comic-book dude called The Monster Master at the head of a small flock of absolutely CRAZY 30th-century monsters.
I can't believe they didn't put this story on the cover.

"The Legion of Super-Monsters" in Adventure Comics #309 is now one of my favorite LSH stories!
Wait until you see the wondrous dangers of ... Monster World!
Also, Bouncing Boy saves the day!

I'm reading Adventure #306, with the first appearance of the Substitute Legion. I think I've read it before ... somewhere ... but it's been a while.
It must have been really galling to the Subs that Bouncing Boy was a full-fledged member of the Legion while they all had to be Substitute Legionnaires!
Bouncing Boy!
(And I say that as one of Chuck's biggest fans.)

And I also read the first appearance of Lightning Lass today. She masquerades as Lightning Lad (who was killed a few issues ago) for some reason.
And they finally realize she must be a girl (Garth's twin sister) because she doesn't have an Adam's apple.
So weird!
(So is Ayla really tall or is Garth really short?)
