I think my favorite idea for color kid was that he could, in theory, completely decimate the Green Lantern corps by turning everything yellow That would be brilliant! Some of the Legionnaires, despite the inherent silliness of their power, could actually be almost all-powerful. Just sic Matter Eater Lad on Warworld... He'll chew it down to nothing. Light Lass can make things "lighter", which means she controls gravity... between her and Star Boy, it should be a piece of cake to send whole planets zoom out of their orbits, or be crushed into black holes. Gates could teleport the top half of an attacking army far away, if he wasn't such a good socialist and if Legionnaires didn't frown upon killing people. Chlorophyll Kid could devastate entire ecosystem, or have plants grow into trees inside opponents, as Swamp Thing did at some point. Chemical King could speed up glycolysis so much that bad guys catch on fire, and of course Element Lad is basically a god (as demonstrated in Legion Lost). The founding members weren't actually that powerful, all things considered!

Geoff Johns also did something similar where early on in his run, Hal found a way for his ring to overcome yellow and taught the other green lanterns how to do it as well. (Kyle didn't have this issue for some reason that I can't recall). The yellow impurity is dumb, yes (less dumb than Alan's weakness to wood), but it's a necessary fail-safe to prevent GLs from becoming total gods. Something I guess that wasn't thought about when Hal went crazy during Emerald Twilight Thanks, I was pretty sure somebody later on picked up on that and took it further!
I like Kyle in stories of his I've read, but I don't know much about his early stories, because his editor at the time pissed me off so much, I not only stopped buying GREEN LANTERN, I stopped buying all new books the guy was involved in!
Ironically, had the previous editor Andy Helfer not insisted on his "Let's give Hal's career some closure" idea, Gerard Jones probably would have introduced a new GL-- maybe a lot like Kyle-- when he first got on the series! (Kinda like how Roger Stern & Tom Lyle had done with their STARMAN series.)

A-HA! Found an instance of Star Trek tech in Legion! From issue #215, "The Hero Who Wouldn't Fight"

A-HA! Found an instance of Star Trek tech in Legion! From issue #215, "The Hero Who Wouldn't Fight" I'm reminded, lead actor Steven Hill got FIRED off MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE for that sort of thing.
"So, your entire team got killed because you woudn't go into action on the Sabbath? What were you doing going on that mission in the first place? GET OUT!"

Did anybody ever submit their fan vote(s) in the leader elections back in the day? If so, do you remember who you voted for? And/or if you were voting today, who would you pick (any era is fine)?

Tough choice! Brainiac 5 is obviously the smartest, but has had periods of mental instability. I thought Saturn Girl was an excellent leader, and Cosmic Boy was very good, too. Chameleon Boy was always clever and a great leader of the Espionage Squad, until he had trouble handling the news that RJ Brande was his father (so did I!!) and led the team on a very ill-advised mission into Khundia, getting himself sent to Takron-Galtos. All in all, I guess I'd vote for Saturn Girl.

I remember they were still voting for the leader in the eighties and I always rooted for Brainiac Five. I don’t think I ever actually voted. They brought it back in the New Fifty Two era and I voted for Dream Girl.

I never actually voted back in the day, but looking back Saturn Girl and Element Lad were probably my favorite leaders. Brainiac 5 is actually my favorite Legionnaire, but dbutler69 I was thinking similarly about some of his mental instability at times. The Brande reveal including relationship to Chameleon Boy was just crazy, I still remember my reaction as well!

If she hadn't been taken (and Brainy hadn't had a thing for Supergirl), Brainy & Saturn Girl would have made a good couple.
Isn't it funny, fantasizing about 55-year-old comics soap-opera?

Yes, I think it was a popularity contest. I remember reading a letter during the second Levitz run (in the 80's) where a fan prosed getting rid of having the fans vote for leader (because let's face it, sometimes the results don't make sense - Wildfire and Polar Boy winning?!?!) and Levitz said that he enjoyed it, as he enjoyed the challenge of writing in whatever winner the fans came up with. One thing I do like about Levitz is that he was a genuine Legion fan.
