I also have one choice who had no collaborators on his most famous work, did all the work on the book himself: plots, pencils, inks. But it's not clear he did a whole lot of scripting.

No matter what Kurt says, I have every intention of cheating a little. I have at least one popular choice who did plenty of great "eligible" work, but who I truly love for some technically ineligible work, only because some other dude added some scripting after the heavy lifting had been done. As long as you only cite the eligible work in your entry, none will be the wiser. Cei-U! I summon the loophole!

I think I've got my final 12. I also have nine great ones that just didn't make the list. Reasonably sure no one else is going to have my #7 nor my #11.
None of mine ended up being comic strip creators.

Ditko and Lee ? I see a theme in our humor

I've been adding to my list (up to 29), but except for a couple of massive oversights in my first draft, none of my top people getting dislodged. They tend to be people I'll actually gladly spend money on. Again, I deliberately stayed away from newspaper cartoonists. Of the current top 12: - All are American
- Eight are still active; the other four are deceased
- The oldest living person on the list--and third-oldest overall--is the only one to work for one of the Big Two in the past 10 (maybe 20) years

I thought I was at 13, but I doublechecked the date for one of my favorite works and it was 2004, so it was eligible, making that cartoonist #14 on the list. Oy. That said a lot of the people I thought would be in my top 10 when I did my initial brainstorming had slotted down to either the honorable mention list of being juggled for one of the final spots.
Before I finalize though I do have a nitpicky question for Kurt-if the cartoonist did all the heavy lifting and the script was in a language other than English, but someone else did the English translation of the script-are they still eligible?
Along those lines-if the work was produced pre-2005 but the English translation didn't appear until after 2005, are they still eligible?

So I'm in, I have my 12 cartoonists. It feels really weird that my runner ups are such a quality bunch : Katsuhiro Otomo, Frank Miller, Adrian Tomine, Dan Clowes, Dave Lapham, Dave McKean, Carl Barks, Basil Wolverton, Sam Kieth, Michael Deforge, Rick Veitch, Windsor McCay, Jamie Hernandez, Dave Sim, Walt Kelly, Will Eisner...
But even if my 12 faves maybe are not the best ever, at least, they are ones I'd purchase anything from, and enjoys observing them grow in their craft, so it will mostly be about living cartoonists. I just have to now elaborate on the ranking...

ou don't have to post your picks on the first possible day, either. Hell, I think Kurt was gone/fell behind for a couple days one year!
