Like many others here I collect in order to read, so condition matters to me only if it affects the reading experience: for example, disfiguring stains, loose or (Heaven forfend) missing pages or cut-outs, etc.
I would include the modern re-colouring in reprints like Marvel's Masterworks as something that affects my reading experience adversely, so that might be an unexpected instance of the kind of thing that would put me off a book.

as long as I can read it in its entirety I'm good. -M Same here. I've written card game scores and telephone messages in the back blank spaces of some of my comics.

I am a collector, but I don't obsess over condition. If i buy a new book, yes, I expect it to be pretty much perfect, but if I'm buying something thirty years old, the main thing is simply to have it. So long as the book is complete, I'm generally fine with it. My only real pet hate is water damaged books. Oddly enough, slight water damage made my copy of Arkham Asylum look even cooler. Though it also recently destroyed my copy of Superman #400.

See I have a bunch of coverless Silver Age books that I picked up for a quarter each, that are great reads despite the cover missing and even have a few remaindered copies of Silver Age books (books where the retailer did what he/she was supposed to do when returning the books cutting off the top quarter to third of the front cover with the title banner and issue information) also picked up for like a quarter each. They are still completely readable for the story, and these days with access to the internet I can see the cover (or even print a replacement if I want to). I don't pay much for these coverless copies, but I will plunk up to a buck down for a Silver Age book (or if I ever found them, Golden Age) to read regardless of cover. That said, I've seen a coverless copy of Captain America Comics #1 still go for over a grand at auction so I doubt I will ever get any Golden age books that way.
The only time I care at all is if it was something I was looking to frame and display, then I want a nice looking cover, but the interior pages wouldn't matter as much.
However, I expect to pay less for beat up copies, so if I am paying for a new book I want it to be in new condition, but once I get into dollar and quarter bin fodder as long as the book is readable I am good.
-M
