Maybe I've just been reading the wrong stuff, but the only '50s DC strips I unabashedly love are Sugar and Spike and Rex the (M#$%#$%^&*() Wonder Dog.) But around the turn of the decade you got Star Hawkins and Sgt. Rock and the Justice League and all kinds of cool stuff. But through the '50s it seems like DC was more conservative than the industry leaders (Dell for sure, and EC I guess) without the insane talent pools. What am I missing?

Oh, and the Silent Knight. Always had a thing for the Silent Knight.

You had Kirby's Green Arrow as well, also near the end of the decade. Not too conservative, particularly Kirby's origin for the character. It's as zany as an episode of Gilligan's Island.

I just go along with Superman and Batman from this era...mainly with content from the 30s to the 70s Hardcovers as I only have a handful of actual comics from this era. This one barely makes it....1959....but nice shape tho

Most baffling of all though is the helmet.

He had to know his role and smell what the US Army was cooking.

He had to know his role and smell what the US Army was cooking.[ Jeez, he makes Beetle Bailey look like Jason Bourne! Is that a legit War-era Superman page? It looks like Wayne Boring, but what do I know?

This one barely makes it....1959....but nice shape tho I kind of dig the regimented formal creativity of the Weissinger Supes - Like the early Jimmy Olsen comics would have three stories in every issue and every story would have a cool idea at it's center - not just "let's bring back Two-Face or the Mandarin or whoever for the 30,098,000th time." But, man, even the best of the '50s DC books weren't close to the best Fawcett stories which were funnier with stronger characterization or - counting Bill Everett's awesome Sub-Mariner revival - even Marvel/Atlas. I haven't read Kirby's Green Arrow in foorrrrrreeeeeeevvvvvveeeeeer (like 2001, when they released a trade) and don't remember much about it. I generally don't like late '50s Kirby as much as Simon and Kirby or Lee and Kirby or '70s Kirby, but I should try'n read those again.

I do really like what I've read of the Gil Kane (Western) Johnny Thunder strip a lot, too.

C'mon, you have to give National credit for their War Comics in the 50s. Nobody was putting out a more consistent, high-quality product within the genre, and you had Kubert, Kanigher, Andru, Esposito, Haney, Heath, etc. setting a standard that many would argue has yet to be surpassed.

I don't have a lot of 50s DC, but what I do have and that I've liked inslude the following (mostly in reprint format of some kind... I have the debut of the Flash in the Silver Age Classics reprint series and have read the first Flash archives. I really liked the early Flash stories, they read like good adventure stories with a flair of super science. Our Army at War #81 (Millennium Editon reprint is the one I have) featuring the debut of Sgt. Rock and some classic DC war comics... Blackhawk (#108 the first DC issue shown here)... I have the first (only) Showcase volume and while I haven't finished it, have enjoyed what I read). the various Kirby shorts form books like House of Secrets and My Greatest Adventure I have collected in this... I also have the Kirby Green Arrow stuff and am not as enamored with it. and lastly the Adam Strange stuff form the Showcase volume that I have sampled... I should mention that Martian Manhunter back ups form Detective, as I enjoy some of them, but in small doses as they are highly repetitive. -M

The book that intrigues me most from DC in the 50s... I have 2 stories from the 50s series reprinted in various 100 page/80 page giants from DC, but have never seen an actual issue of this first 6 issue series. I liked the 2 stories I read though... -M

I thought the artwork on this 1956 copy of Unexpected was ahead of its time...
