Though we already have a thread for discussing classic films, this is a place where we choose a theme each month and watch and comment on films surrounding that theme. Essentially, the club works as follows: 1) Each month, a theme is chosen (ex. "Sci-fi," "gangland/mafia," "film franchises of the 1980s") 2) Please reserve a post in this thread where you will continue to update your list of viewed films that fit the theme of the month (much like we do for the Classic Comic Books Club). 3) Whoever gets the most "into the spirit" by watching the most films that meet the theme's criteria gets to choose the next month's theme. 4) As this is a "classic" film club, we're looking at films that had a theatrical release date prior to January 1st, 2006. 5) While you're certainly welcome to watch television shows, they do not count towards your list. 6) Films under a 60 minute run-time also do not count towards your list 7) No person may choose the theme for two months in a row. If the person who chose the month's theme watches the most films for that month, the person with the second most films will choose the theme for the next month. 8) Whoever watches the most films in September must choose a horror related theme for October.
This thread has fallen into disuse. Anyone interested in choosing a new topic and getting this thread going again is very welcome to do so!

To ring in the new year I choose... Everything is better with Apes!
 (or maybe not! ^)If it features any kind of ape in a starring role from spider monkeys to gorillas and everything in between(excepting man) then it counts. I don't remember if it was TMC or the Sci-fi channel but growing up there used to be a planet of the apes marathon on new years day, so I thought let's bring that back but I decided to broaden the scope to all apes for a larger variety of films from sci-fi to comedy and even documentaries. I mean, I've just rewatched all three King Kongs, the Romero movie still is freash in my mind (saw it 3 times including in the theatre), as are the Diane Fossey movies and the original Pierre Boule movie. I've yet to watch its sequels though, so that might be my way in, if I find some room in my schedule between the hundreds of movies I've yet to watch from my DVD collection and hard drives, haha.

So in Planet of the Apes, Cornelius had just discovered some loose evidence to support the idea that an advanced human civilization predated their ape civilization. Beneath the Planet of the Apes cannot be that far in the future (weeks? months?) and a war has broken out, surely impacting too much more serious archeological findings. Yet somehow by Escape from the Planet of the Apes he is able to explain in great detail how human society fell as apes rose, from a plague on dogs and cats to the domestication of apes to the growing intelligence of apes, to the revolt of apes... Explain. If that's the biggest logic/continuity issue you found in watching the first three movies, you were not watching closely enough  GREAT series, and a favorite guilty pleasure of mine, but logic was never its strong point. |

Perhaps this suggestion is a bit questionable as an "ape movie" but I was reminded of Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan a few weeks ago in one of the movie threads here and I think that's worth a look for anyone who hasn't seen it before.

My plans for the month include watching/rewatching the rest of the Planet of the Apes series, including the films too new to count here. Hoping to watch/rewatch 5 King Kong films. And I see Monkey Business is on Netflix. Also considering Congo. If anybody else knows any ape-based science fiction, I'd be interested. 1976's Ape! comes to mind, it's a corny King Kong knock off but its fun, and then there's another King Kong knock off that I liked called Konga(which spawned a comic with art by Ditko) 1987's Project X with Matthew Broderick and 1940's Karloff classic The Ape is an all time favorite. If anybody else knows any ape-based science fiction, I'd be interested. Not so much SF, but Romero's Monkey Shine is a great movie and tackles societal topics in a quite SF fashion. Here's a few more or ones that I've meant to watch for some time now : Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back Barbet Schroeder's mesmerizing "Koko" french comedy featuring Eric Cantona "Mookie" Clint Eastwood staring in both Every Which Way But Loose & Any Which Way You Can Any Which Way You Can Link is another obvious choice Project X is a nice all age SF movie Schlock is aweful, but pretty cool at the same time Shakma is another horror monkey movie that has been on my radar since the 80ies video rental days James Franco's first movie as a director "The Ape" The Ivory Ape with Jack Palance In the shadow of Kilimanjaro Oh, and I might finally give in to Playmate of the Apes, a softcore lesbian parody of the Tim Burton movie that looks like tons of stupid fun. |
