What's a Comic Book Challenge?- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion - a way to figure out "what do I read next?" - motivation to try different genres - motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles - a place to get recommendations How does it work?- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month - we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month - you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read - in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter What makes it a "challenge"?- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed - the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine) Who can participate?- anyone and everyone! - you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that? - quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not When does it start and end?- it begins at dusk on the 21st, and ends at dawn on the 3rd - this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content - content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges How does counting work?- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really - in general, a comic book counts as one - for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages Who wins?- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day What is the schedule?January - TV/Movie/Book February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners March - Rotating Company April - TBD (random idea every year) May - Make-Your-Own June - Reality July - Science Fiction August - Fantasy September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone October - Horror November - Comedy December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Interest on these is perhaps down to the 'none' level, but what the heck.
Sorry for the late posting, happy New Year everyone.
This month the plan is to concentrate on any comic derived from or made into a TV show, movie, serial, podcast, or radio show.
Maybe I'll start with that Star Wars bundle from Dark Horse that I regretably couldn't resist.

I want to participate in this SOOOOO badly. But with my schedule and such, I cannot possibly commit to 100 books a month. I could commit to maybe a book a day. I will not go more than that. Can I still play?

Can I still play? Of course, any participation is great! I've had months where I read maybe two books, but I still consider myself a full participant. It's quite a liberal 'game'.

What if, for kind-of-sort-of-new-to-comics people like myself, we don't have books that fall into the monthly genre?

Well for this month Coldwater, SPider-Man was turned into a movie (and TV show and animated series) so all those Spidey's you're reading would count if I read the OP correctly. And there was a Legion animated tv series too.... -M

I'm just trying to cover all my bases here.

I think some months are fairly limited, part of the Challenge is to motivate us to try things we normally don't read, but most months are fairly liberal. This month actually allows pretty much every comic book ever created!

I just got the BOOM! Humble Bundle so I can play this time around. Probably won't do 100 but I can put the Usagi Yojimbo Saga down for a month I think.

Read Batman Adventures (Based on the '90s TV Series 1-4)
Got the oversized Buffy: Tales of the Slayers and Tales of the Vampires HC out of the library.
Buffy is a top 5 favorite TV show, but none of the comics ever did much for me, except these which I remember being great.
.. Ok, there was also one story drawn by Chynna Clugston. That was good too. But none of the Season 8 stuff really hit me.

Hmmm read Hip Hop Family Tree which has segments with the protagonists appearing on Soul Train, Saturday Night Live and MTV...does that count? Have read abunch of Daredevil from the Bendis run (46-60 I think offhand), and DD is now a Netflix series, I could count all the Sixth Gun I read, but NBS decided to not air the pilot they made after they optioned the series (boo, hiss) Have read a bunch of Hellboy too (Vol. 5 and 6) star of 2 major motion pictures. And 3 issues of Justice League of America (100-102) which had a few seasons of an animated series. That puts me somewhere in the mid-20s (I'll do an exact count at some point) of issues read for the challenge this month so far. -M
