Murray Boltinoff called the shots through most of Bob Haney's Brave and Bold run, determining who got the co-star slot by noting what past co-stars sold well, what characters had new (or struggling) books or series that needed plugging, and other practical considerations. Haney did have certain combinations he liked--Deadman, Green Arrow, the Metal Men--because they blended well into Batman's world but it was still the editor who made the decisions. Cei-U! I summon my all-time favorite series! That makes sense - I assume that Brave and the Bold during the Haney/Aparo period was mostly concerned with launching potential spin- (which never seemed to happen) rather than bringing in the biggest potential guest stars. (Also, I wouldn't be TOO surprised if Haney was a little uncomfortable writing the Julie Scwartz Superhero characters.) Although B & B was supposedly a very good seller anyway.

Kevin Smith and Onomatopoeia. Has any other writer ever used this villain? (For that matter, does anyone other than Smith even like this character?)

Greg Rucka and his use (and sometimes overuse) of Renee Montoya. While Rucka gave her depth, the overuse of her in Gotham Central was a bit too much at times. There was a cast of 20 officers and he mainly used 2... shame. I'm sure he could've created some serious stories with some of the others.

Alan Grant and Anarky. Anarky essentially exists as a mouthpiece to espouse whatever political philosophy Grant is currently obsessed with, and Grant tends to get tetchy if any other writer attempts to do something with the character.

Haney always said he didn't care what characters were used - B & B co-stars were all based on sales. (He also refused to write a Batman/Supergirl team-up, though. So grain of salt time.) Well, he did write the Supergirl-WW story in B and B 63. Haney had finished his run on B and B with the Batman-Kamandi story in B and B 157, late 1979, and though I would assume that sales played a big part in the frequency of certain co-stars (hey, the Metal Men were frequently featured), B and B was also a Showcase-like book, with appearances by I, Vampire, Scalphunter, Nemesis, et. al. to pump up new backup series or titles. Maybe there was an agreement that the book would vary between new co-stars and old reliables but that the editors wouldn't be held responsible if some of the new features didn't draw the same response. In that sense, it was probably like a loss-leader for DC in certain months, given that there would always be a core audience of Batman fans who would pick up every issue no matter the co-star.

Anyone else have a soft spot for Steve Gerber's ever downtrodden Richard Rory? I think he turned up in almost every series Gerber wrote for Marvel, but oddly enough was never seen in the one in which he'd probably have been most at home (HTD).

I do, and he's on my list of 50 Best Supporting Characters and having said that I need time to think about it and I will make some comments about Richard Rory in about 2-3 weeks from now. Stay Tuned.

I'm a huge Steve Gerber fan (I was part of an essay project about the interconnected Gerber-verse, fer cryin' out loud!) but I'm not sure I ever realized that was the same character in different series.... Good Call!

I'm a fan of Paul Simon's Richard Cory I'd never heard of Richard Cory, but apparently Richard Rory was given that name because Gerber was listening to the radio at the time he created him.
