I have a 1970s reprint issues of Shazam! that has 100 pages of Golden Age Marvel Family silliness. And it's all wonderful! But my favorite is Tawky Tawny. I also have this slipcover: Which has this inside, an oversized reprint of the classic Monster Society of Evil story that ran in about a million issues of Captain Marvel Adventures in the 1940s:

I've never read anything from Captain Marvel's Fawcett years, but I love the Jerry Ordway series from the 90's. If you can find any of the Fawcett stuff, get it, it holds up amazingly well for stuff written in the 40's and is probably the most entertaining comic book written exclusively as "wholesome fun for young children" that I've ever read

Big fan. I'm a long time subscriber to the notion of the superhero as adolescent male power fantasy, so having a character that transforms from child/teen into a super powered adult has always worked for me. That's part of the reason why I initially enjoyed Prime from the Malibu Ultraverse so much. Also liked the idea of full grown man with an adolescent brain more than just a child transforming into an adult Me too. I liked Prime also.
Captain Marvel (& the Marvel Family)? I loved them. The Fawcett stuff holds up really well. I have the 1970's Shazam series by DC & the Power of Shazam series. I really think Ordway had a great update on Cap while keeping his timeless qualities. I had hoped DC would do something with him after his back ups in Justice League. I have fond memories of Sat mornings watching Shazam/Isis.

Yeah, for the life of me I can't figure out why DC hasn't done anything with Cap after the back ups. The collected version of those back ups sold well, the issue Morrison did during Multiversity did extremely well and the two part story from Convergence was one of the better sellers from that event so it's obvious that there is interest but no series.

It could be a case of waiting for the movie to raise the character's profile. The recent stories have helped build a good fanbase after all of that nonsense just prior to Flashpoint, but maybe it's not enough for DC to trust that a new series would last until the film comes out.

batflunkie - I'm a huge Captain Marvel Fan and I'm glad you are starting up a thread for the Big Red Cheese. Tbh, I was kind of surprised that there wasn't one to begin with already. My mom also loved Shazam along with Miracleman and had those huge, oversized issues from the 70's that were full of reprints of older Fawcett material. I've actually gotten into a lot of series because of her, namely Judge Dredd, Tom Strong, and Green Lantern

Captain Marvel and Captain America were my dad's favorite comics when he was a kid in the 40s-unfortunately my grandmother threw away all his comics when he got drafted in the 50s so I never got to inherit those Golden age beauties -M

Also wanted to say how much I enjoy Captain Marvel Junior as a secondary title. Its probably the only instance I've seen of a main character's secret identity being that of a handicapped individual

I first discovered Captain Marvel/Shazam on the live action Saturday morning show. I remember his NBC Saturday morning cartoon show as well. I still have my Mego Shazam figure (Isis too). I always liked Shazam. His adventures were fun, colorful, and a joy to read. I first read his adventures in comic form when he appeared in World's Finest. I've followed him off and on for years. A truly great character, especially when drawn by Kurt Schaffenburger. Even had a Little Golden Book Shazam adventure. I think it took place at a circus.

The Big Red Cheese and family were front and center in the first comic I ever remember reading.
