Because if you change how the art is presented you fundamentally change the art.
Which comics that have been collected in a bound volume work really, really well in that format, and which... well, don't.
My thought - I'm reading New Teen Titans in TPB. This and Marvel's X-men were the two biggest selling superhero comics in the early-mid eighties. X-men seems to have retained a lot of fans, while Teen Titans hasn't. I'm wondering if this isn't that the early (New) X-men stories read really smoothly when collected, while Teen Titans... don't. (They're so dense! So many pages! So many words! So many teeny tiny little panels!)
Also, I think the collected format would be the optimal way to enjoy Reptisaurus, a touching 7 issue saga about how true love conquers all especially if you are a giant monster. Somebody should get on that.

The ones which maybe 'don't' are probably the ones which have been recoloured to the point of becoming an eyesore to someone who fondly remembers the original. I've heard that complaint many times about certain collected editions (which, in all other respects, do collect a nice run of books).

Yeah, Neal Adams, give it up! They were fine the first time!

I remember years ago buying the first trade that reprinted the Dark Phoenix saga and it was drastically a different read without those classic covers. The original comic book covers are a part of the experience and should always be included in a collected volume.

Yeah, Neal Adams, give it up! They were fine the first time! I agree. I am staying away from his upcoming Batman Omnibus because it will include his dreadful altered art! I just can't believe that DC allowed this a second time.

I'd think a part of why say the Teen Titans run is not as popular is like many older DC runs/titles, they are not reflected much at all in current comics. This is not the case with 80s Xmen, as even the movies directly reference those titles.

Not exactly what you're asking, but the only classic comic trades I'm really after are the Kirby Fourth World Omnibuses. It's less because of the art and more because following the order of stories is semi-complex without the convenience of the trade format.
I really need Marvel to re-release these!

I recently read New Teen Titans omnibus 1 and 2.....it was fun for nostalgia, but I wasn't exactly blown away reading the stories this time around like I was as a child. It was nice to see the stories all collected like that. I do really enjoy the X-Men and Uncanny X-Men masterworks books. The Dark Phoenix saga is outstanding. I've read and re-read that story several times. 2 of my favorite omnibus editions are West Coast Avengers 1 and 2. I never read those stories in the 80s, but I find them fun to read now. I like the line up as well. Another favorite collected edition is Strange Apparitions with Batman stories. The Marshall Rogers art really pops!
I would love to read a Wonder Woman omnibus with some of the 70s and 80s stories, especially the issues with art by Gene Colan and Don Heck. Would also like a LSH collected edition featuring the story where Superboy was Reflecto and the team thought Ultra Boy was dead. This is going way, way back but I would like a collected edition of Nancy comics and Fritzi Ritz. I have some of the old Nancy comics that are falling apart. The stories are simple, but pack so many gags into a single page story. Fun stuff!

That's one that really bothered me, actually - I didn't think that Jimmy Olsen belonged there at all, after the first couple of issues.

Although I believe the cartoon did a season-long adaptation of the Judas Contract....
