The good old days were when SNL featured Gumby, dammit! My wife and I recently showed our daughters all of the old "Gumby" and "Mr. Robinson" sketches. Tremendously funny stuff there.

I think for me it was back when Mike Myers was there, the Wayne's World days. I don't get Farrell's popularity, he's never made me laugh much. Farrell is okay in very, very small doses. I actually really liked him as the straight man in Stranger Than Fiction. That's a fun movie. Agree on the small doses thing. He's fine in things like Wedding Crashers where he only has 10 minutes or so, but when he has to carry a movie, he wears thin pretty quickly (although I will admit that I love the first Anchorman, because it's just SO absurd, but a lot of that is due to the great work by the supporting actors). Only other exception is Elf, which I watched for the first time with my daughters over the holidays; I'd seen it before and thought it was just OK, but seeing it with them was a much different experience. I don't know of any actor at that time who could have pulled off the character of Buddy without it seeming forced, while Farrell truly makes Buddy's innocence/cluelessness and excitement over Christmas feel real.

Yeah, Anchorman is my noted exception to the limited Farrell policy. Oh, I liked Blades of Glory, too, but again, he was splitting focus with a good supporting cast.

I am indifferent about Farrell. If the movie seems like it's something interesting I'll watch it. But I don't avoid or look out for his movies. All that said, for me his best movie is Everything Must Go. It's not a comedy, which is a rare thing for him, but really showed off his acting skills. It had a great, mostly unknown, cast that were great support in the movie. It deals with a personal issue I deal with myself, so maybe that biased my opinion of it. But I thought it was a brilliant movie.

[spolier] {Spoiler: Click to show} Ferral's character should have died! That was the whole point of the film! [/spolier]
But generally yes. A small talent spread a very very log way. - according to the IMDb he is about to fuck up remake The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. (If you haven't seen it I can recommend the original.)
I bet Brendon Fraser could have done it - but then I think Brendon Fraser is just gorgeous. (There I said it. Brendon Fraser is HOT!)

I really hate the movie Elf. I'm mostly indifferent to Will Farrell. But I hate that movie.

I liked the ending in Stranger Than Fiction, and I thought how they pulled it off within the movie was fun.

Full disclosure, I haven't actually watched a Will Farrell movie all the way through. From the bits I've seen here and there, I'd say Anchorman is the one I would probably give a try if I was forced to make a choice. Elf doesn't appeal to me at all.

Farrell is another I think is better in a supporting role than a lead, though I haven't seen Elf. I don't find him that funny, consistently; but he can be. He always came across as too "showy," trying too hard for the laugh, rather than letting it come from the character.
I tended to prefer the really good character people in SNL; not the ones who created the big "star" characters; but, the guys who could play all types of characters. In the original run, it was mainly Dan Akroyd, though Bill Murray could fit into that mold, in a more limited sense. Akroyd could be whatever was needed, from a Charles Foster Kane, to a refrigerator repairman, to a sleazy businessman, high volume tv pitchman, alien, whatever.
Phil Hartman also fit into that category, as he could do anything. Jane Curtain and Jan Hooks did that on the female side. I always thought SNL was at its best when it had good utility players and good character performers.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby is my favorite Will Ferrel movie and always will be. It's such a scathing satire of Nascar and the deep south
Also, as mentioned previously, I enjoyed Stranger Than Fiction a lot too. Liked what little of Step Brothers I saw. Love anything with John C Reily, glad to see him getting the appreciation and roles that he deserves

I HATED Step Brothers. I am still annoyed I spent two hours watching that crap that I could have spent taking an actual crap on the toilet and enjoyed it more.

Batman Returns and Batman Forever are equal. Equally good, equally bad.
There, I said it.

Batman Returns and Batman Forever are equal. Equally good, equally bad. There, I said it. Enh....I'd say Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman elevated Returns over Forever, which I found to have few redeeming moments. Batman I enjoyed for what it was, but lamented that it wasn't "my" Batman and the some of Burton's little quirks. They were relatively few; so I pretty much enjoy it from start to finish. Returns was just the quirks unleashed, with a horrible take on the Penguin, a wasted Christopher Walken in a pointless role, and Michelle Pfeiffer being the one redeeming feature, but given a painfully stupid origin (and this is after Year One gave us something reasonable (though turned her into a prostitute/dominatrix). Forever was just a mess, with a very select few moments ( I didn't hate Robin ; but, the movie just never really pulled me in much). I skipped Batman & Robin, after the horrible trailer and the bad jokes and butt shots. I have seen 5 minutes of it and that was enough to convince me never to watch the rest of it. Begins I mostly like, except the incessant need to come up with a rationale for everything and the darkness of it. Dark Knight was way to bleak for my tastes and I had to go watch some Adam West to get the taste out of my mouth. Dark Knight Rises was a train wreck, as far as I was concerned. Mask of the Phantasm is still the best Batman movie, ever and I personally enjoy the Adam West film far more than any of the modern Batman films.
