I love dates but wish they didn't look like cockroaches.

I love dates but wish they didn't look like cockroaches. Interesting. See, I love cockroaches because they look like dates. That chitinous crunch really spices up a bland oatmeal. My buddy Renfield swears by 'em.

Kanye West is walking around waiting to get dumped by Kim. Wasn't he watching her act before he married her?

Foyle's War ( until the last season when it went off the rails) if the best period drama I've ever seen. They fact that it's also a cool cop show is icing on the cake. I know what you mean. Sometimes you just have to leave well enough alone. And loved it maybe even more for the period drama aspects you mention. Overall, a wonderful series. Yeah, all I really wanted is to see Foyle nail the American guy he promised to get in season... 2 I think? I didn't need whatever that last season was... never mind the crappy epilogue for Sam.

@popzeus , may I suggest also River, a British detective show with a few definite twists? I also liked Luther quite a bit, with this caveat: after aseason or two (they blend together in my memory), the power and the mystery tend to wear off and the violence becomes a kind of "Can you top this? competition with the previous episode. And like CSI Vegas, Luther makes it seem as if its home city is a maniac's playground where serial killers are free to spree on a weekly, even nightly basis. But that first season in particular is riveting. I didn't mention Luther because it's a bit more violent and graphic than the others... but no doubt it's an amazing show. LIke Foyle's War, though, skip the last season... not only is the main bad guy not present, but the event that ends the season previous (3, I think... it's hard to keep it straight with British shows) completely ruins it for me.

I hope you and @popzeus have seen Foyle's War. I love it! Seems right up your alleys. www.foyleswar.comFoyle's War (until the last season when it went off the rails) if the best period drama I've ever seen. They fact that it's also a cool cop show is icing on the cake. Of the rest of that list, I liked Inspector Lynley alot.. in alot of cases the show is actually better than the novels. Wallander and Father Brown never did a whole lot for me ,but are both decent (wife is big fans of those too). I've sampled just about all the other british ones, but none really caught my fancy. One that's missing that might be of interest is George Gently.. is a 60s period mystery that's almost as good as Foyle's War as far as setting goes. . George Gently had appallingly bad period detail. Utterly appalling. Starting with, why is the middle-aged title character walking about with a fashionable mid-2000s haircut in the mid-1960s on down. Just like the equally historically slap-dash Heartbeat, putting a few female characters in mini-skirts, having the odd Beatle-esque moptop on show, or playing "She Loves You" in the background (while ignoring everything else), is not enough to accurately conjure a mid-1960s setting. I've also read that much of the police procedure in it -- such as the cautions the characters give when arresting someone -- are modern police procedures, not the ones that would've been used in the'60s. Irrespective of that, there are plenty of much more obvious fashion and set dressing problems that are easy to spot for anyone with a good understanding of '60s social history or fashion. I'm someone who is very sensitive to historical inaccuracies or anachronisms in my TV drama. And George Gently does not cut the mustard with me. Agreed that Foyle's War was quite well done though. George Gently is excellent and really captures the look and feel of the 60s. No...no it really doesn't. See my above comment to Wildfire2099.

I'll have to watch more closely next time the wife watches George Gently... maybe the faux-Beatles music and the mini-skirts were distracting me on the other details

Your mileage may vary.
