Like Freddie Mercury didn't try on outlandish gear too. I still adore Another One Bites The Dust

Like Freddie Mercury didn't try on outlandish gear too. Yeah, well...that's my whole point. Queen are ABBA for boys.

I can't stand them. It's the campness, the terrible clothes and their deep rooted lack of "cool". They're like a joke band! I can appreciate the brilliance of their pop music on a technical level, but their songs have never really done it for me. Here's an attendant question: In my experience, it's mostly females that are the biggest ABBA fans, while guys tend not to like them. But are Queen essentially ABBA for boys? Both acts are camp as hell, both wear outlandish '70s costumes, both wrote impeccable pop tunes, and both have songs with big sing-along choruses. How could any self-respecting musician compare ABBA to Queen??? ABBA is fun, no doubt, but Queen had range. They had silly pop tunes, and they had brilliantly expressive masterpieces. ABBA couldn't write Bohemian Rhapsody, or Who Wants to Live Forever, or Innnuendo, or all of Queen II. Ahh, but could Brian or Freddie have written Dancing Queen or Does Your Mother Know?

I loved ABBA. There! I said it! I can't stand them. It's the campness, the terrible clothes and their deep rooted lack of "cool". They're like a joke band! Well, I turned 13 in 1985, but I was buying records with my pocket money from 1979 onwards, when I was 7. So I do remember ABBA at the time. I didn't like them back then either.

then you have Genesis' Peter Gabriel... any number of Bowie get ups... Yeah, but Bowie and Gabriel get a free pass because, you know, "art rock". ...not too mention all the glam acts and then stuff like Kiss, Twisted Sister, and all that followed in their wake. Costuming and spectacle (and it was mostly all camp)was an accepted and expected part of 70s music (and into the 80s), rock or pop. To a degree, yes. Although there were also plenty of big bands that dressed, relatively, normally in the '70s. And even among the more extravagantly dressed, some were worse than others. I mean, Kiss looked ridiculous too, but they get away with it because clearly their whole image was rather tongue-in-cheek and larger than life. ABBA and Queen, on the other hand, both took themselves and their music much more seriously than Kiss. So, their outlandish sartorial choices are "worse" in my eyes.

Frankly, they've worn sillier outfits! The super friends ! The real marvel of this picture is that, even dressed like that, Agnetha Fältskog still looks hot.

I've never gotten music videos or concerts. Costumes and acts/shows. Music is an audiable joy. I've never been to a concert. Even of my most favorite artists.
That said had I not been to young I'd watched Christina Amphlett prance all over a stage.

Here I am with my sister Marie I saw a similar picture as a kid in my mother's record collection, and I vividly remember asking, "Which one's Marie?" and it wasn't a joke.
