I think it's good to know that there are still good people out there.

Here's a site with nothing but good news: notalwayshopeless.com/It's related to the "Not Always Right" site, but this one "features heartwarming feel-good stories that will restore your faith in humanity."

My friend suffering from ALS has the slowly-developing variety, it turns out, and might still live for years.
This is not a "you just won the lottery" type of good news, but it sure beats the "you just got kicked in the nuts" variety!

I have a friend who is the director of a non-profit agency in a very distressed town just outside of Pittsburgh; the majority of people in this town live well below the poverty line, drugs are rampant, and the transient population is very high, leading to a general sense of hopelessness in the area. One of the facets of his agency is the operation of the local food pantry, which relies entirely on donations in order to serve about 120 families per month.
The post office in the next town over (which happens to be much better off than where my friend operates) had their annual food collection, the proceeds of which they donate to this pantry. The normal haul is about 18 trucks (regular-sized postal trucks) with the backs filled with food, but due to a change in the program this year, where the postal carriers delivered shopping bags to each house a few days ahead of the collection date, the total haul was almost 60 full trucks of food. This will enable the pantry to conserve some of its resources for when times are a bit leaner while not having to cut any of the service they provide to the community now.

The snow we had this morning will not last and we're due for more seasonal weather around Thursday.
Definitely a mixed bag regarding good and bad news, but it seems to end well.

I'm graduating college on Saturday. That's great! Do you have a job lined up yet, any plans to go to post-graduate school, or just take some time off to figure out your next step?

That's great! Do you have a job lined up yet? I can't comment on that, this is supposed to be the good news thread ;P As a guy with two degrees and over 15 years of relevant professional experience who is now into his fourth month of unemployment, I can't even imagine what it's like for you folks just starting out. If I may give some friendly advice, figure out a way to just get your foot in the door somewhere and leave your pride at the door. My first job after getting my second degree, I took a temp job paying $12 an hour that helped me eventually get hired on full-time with that company, which then led to the next 14 years of my career. It might not be glamorous, but making connections, getting experience, and figuring out what you want to do next while still putting some money into your pocket is not the worst thing in the world.

Few, I thought a Morman missionary started as thread... Speaking as a former mormon myself, I can relate. Missionaries are like mosquitoes on a hot summer evening, they're pesky, irritating, and will almost never leave you alone

I think being well-read when it comes to historical events is always good investment of one's time as a good chunk of them still have some similarities to our present state of affairs, but those are morbid truths best saved for another time and another thread

A Brazilian tortoise that lost 85 percent of her shell in a forest fire has been fitted with a new 3-D-printed replacement. Freddy the tortoise was found in a near-death state last year and was not expected to survive. But a rescue group known as the Animal Avengers—four vets, a designer, and a dental surgeon—came to her aid and spent weeks designing and printing the custom shell. After a successful operation, Freddy returned to full mobility sporting a hull that has been hand-painted to blend in with her natural habitat. “This is a milestone in veterinary medicine,” said team member Rodrigo Rabello.
