 Tales of Suspense #49 (1963/64) Lead story is 18pp by Lee/Ditko. Angel is flying nearby when Tony Stark sets off a nucelar bomb for strictly scientific purposes. The radiation makes Angel evil so he stirs up shit and fights Iron Man until the evil wears off at the end and Angel saves Iron Man. There is a 5pp Lee/Lieber backup story with The Watcher. The Watcher is watching some space aliens watch "Earth" (Jasoom). The aliens are hopeful we will nuke ourselves to death, and of course the story is open-ended. Will we? There is also a 2pp prose story reprinted from Spy Thrillers #34 (1955). It is kind of clumsy & ham-fisted. |

The Machine Man LS by DeFalco, Trimpe, and BWS. I pick it up pretty much every year for a re-read. Hands down my favorite limited series of all time. It just puts a smile on my face every time I pick it up. I definitely owe my love of drawing gears,circuits, and wires to BWS's work in this series.

I recently read (prior to bagging and boxing) a slew of Captain America issues from Mark Gruenwald's run. Basically, I was trying to read every issue that I hadn't read previously, as well trying to read each such issue with enough preceding and following issues (when I had them) to give the story some sort of context.
Right now, I'm reading (prior to bagging and boxing) a handful of Untold Tales of Spider-Man (in its newsstand flip book configuration). The Spider-Man stories are quite a hoot, as I remember from reading the direct-sales versions back when they were new; the Avengers Unplugged and Fantastic Four Unplugged flip stories, sadly, aren't as compelling.

I just read Spider-Man #145 for the first time. It's pretty intense. This is the issue where Peter confronts the Gwen Stacy clone for the first time after several issues of tease sightings. (Great Ross Andru art.)
I started reading Spider-Man about issue #152 and I had a few of the other issues from used bookstores, so I basically know what was going on at this time. But I never read #145 before, and it really strips the storyline bare. OMG! That last panel, where Ned Leeds has just told Peter that living Gwen's fingerprints match dead Gwen's fingerprints, and yet, Gwen's grave has her body in it, and the whole Spidey supporting cast is there! Living Gwen is grabbing Peter and he's looking dazed. And Mary Jane is staring into the distance with a "What now?" look.
I'm sorry I never read this before now.

I'm currently re-reading the complete Neal Adams Batman run in trade format. It took me awhile to accept the modernized coloring, but seeing as how its the only way to have his run in trade, I'm still having a great time.

Star Wars #7 (1977/78) -- Slow start to the (post-film adaptation) series. Crimson Jack steals some treasure from Han & Chewie with a promise he will show up in another issue soon. Han & Chewie continue to putz around for a few more pages but nothing too exciting happens.

I have all four and they should be the industry standard for reproducing comics that were original produced on newsprint. |

Furthermore, even though they had the same fingerprints (sic), Ned was able to establish, in ASM #148, which one was the original and which one the clone. Oh Gerry, honey. |

And even without comparing them, MMWs are a good example of bad results. |

I just finished reading The Best of Archie Comics volume 3. Like the previous two volumes, it's a 400+ page collection with stories from every decade of Archie publishing. This one seemed to have more full-length stories than the previous two volumes. Particularly in the 1990's, 2000's and 2010's section, each of them had stories that were reprinting full-length issues rather than the classic 5-6 page shorts. Some of these I just didn't get in terms of being "The Best of," but I think that's because they are trying to give an overview of their whole line. So there were stories from The New Archies and Archie's Weird Mysteries, which are interesting cultural artifacts in terms of Archie Comics history, but for me don't really live up to the best of the company in general even if they may be the best stories those particular titles produced. On the other hand, there were some very nice picks as well from the newer material, some of which I have already read in the actual comics. The "Reversedale" story from Archie #636 is one that I think has a lot of untapped potential, and I expect them to revisit it at some point. And Jughead #200 is a great issue, as well as another reminder of what a terrible shame it was that they canceled the series right in the middle of probably the best run the series had had for at least 45 years. The big surprise for me from the collection, though, was Sabrina the Teenage Witch #70.  I've never been a Sabrina fan. The series has always just been too one note for me. it's literally one joke - she's a teenager, but she's also a witch! Hilarity ensues! Ho hum. This, though, was much more interesting. For those not aware, around #56 or so, Sabrina converted into a manga style series. At the same time, the basic concept of the title was overhauled to give it a modern, Harry Potteresque slant. In this revamped series, Sabrina was a regular teenager by day, attending a normal high school. At night, though, she secretly attended a Hogwarts style high school for witches and wizards. And she had a classic love triangle, with a boy from each high school competing for her attention. The result is something much more interesting and modern than I expected. They have reprinted the whole manga series (which lasted through #100, or about 45 issues) in manga style collections, so I just ordered the first volume. Which is pretty much how I got into Archie to begin with, as I was turned on to Life with Archie after reading the first volume of The Best of Archie Comics two years ago. Good stuff! |
