Wasn't that called The Spirit? I haven't read those in a while. Spirit was as close to Batman as Watchmen was to the Inferior Five. And Eisners GN were not just "slice of life" which as MDG points out they weren't. He did history, society and war.
Didn't say they were. I said they were melodrama.

You just described 3/4 of Marvel's Silver Age super-hero output.

Didn't say they were. I said they were melodrama. This is where we agree to disagree.

I just finished reading the original clone story in Spider-man that was in 143-149. I’m amazed at how fast that tale was wrapped up. It was mildly entertaining but the Andru art was just ok. He actually does nice layouts but his figure work is wonky in places.

I never warmed to Andru on Spider-Man. Those weird poses didn't look right to me. And following Romita was a big downgrade.

Although I first started reading Spidey when Andru was the artist and so imprinted on him, I must concede that Romita was a tough act to follow (as was Kane). But Russ was a very good comic-book artist, and when he drew the Spidey characters they looked like themselves. Peter Parker was not "Generic Brown-Haired Guy" and Mary Jane wasn't "Generic Redhead". Russ could have drawn Pete with a shaven head or MJ with a blonde wig and we'd still have recognized them.
He may not have been very flashy, but he made things look real. That scene in which Pete visits his new apartment gave us the impression the place really existed! (Perhaps it did, for all I know!)

Andru was the shizz on Spider-Man. I appreciate the enduring aesthetic Romita created, but honestly far prefer original Ditko era, or the 70's stuff I grew up on.

I grew up reading both Andru in Amazing Spider-Man and Romita in Marvel Tales. I like both about equally.

The names Ross and Andrew are both associated with Scotland, so I was surprised when I learned that his name was actually Rossoslav Andruskevich.

The only issue I have with Romita is that he made Parker way too handsome. Unless that radioactive blood was doing something to his features, I have a hard time believing Pete could blossom from the Ditko science geek to Brandon from 90210 simply because he graduated high school.
